Star Trek: Federation Installation Nine, Episode 21 New Again

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN

Admiral Kirk was once quoted as saying, "People like us, meaning those that have literally chosen to live among the stars, do NOT have families." And for many that is somewhat true. The problems of having a Mate somewhere while you are away on a Five Year Mission are many! There are an equal number of problems if your Mate is also in Star Fleet serving on another vessel or with you on yours. However that being said, one remembers Admiral Kirk had a brother, Sam so usually there IS some family somewhere.

I am in sort of a unique situation in my family, even with life spans reaching 150 years, not to many families have relatives that have known so many generations and still have the mental capacity to recall with clarity the members of those generations. I had not realized this until recently when the last of my siblings, my youngest sister died. She was four years my junior when I was lost aboard the Bozeman. She died a few weeks ago at the age of 140. Making me feel ancient even though I AM barely 60, at least in physical years!

I have not yet found anyone to talk to Sarrah about what happened when I was attacked by the Trill but I thought some time away from FI-9, with me would do her some good. So when I was informed of my sister's ending, I requested and got a furlough to go to Feresa and attend her memorial and invited Sarrah to come along.

Gerve wanted to take us the Feresa on the Bastet but, beside needing her to patrol the area around FI-9, Star Fleet growls at captains using large ships for personal use. I did however think that borrowing a Runabout for the trip WOULD be a transgression easily forgiven, all things considered!

The trip is a long one but pleasant. Sarrah and I spend most of the time talking or looking at the stars however I did see to it that she continued with her studies to become a fully certified doctor. The Auto-Pilot was on most of the time but I did take the controls occasionally and even let Sarrah fly the Runabout for a while, under my watchful gaze! I wonder if taking Sarrah to what is essentially a funeral will do anything to help her and consider diverting us to Wrigley's Pleasure Planet but she seems excited to meet my family so I shelve that idea for another time. Maybe our honeymoon I catch myself thinking just for a moment!?

"U.S.S. Tigrisss to Feresa Space Control.", I transmit as we enter the star system of 15 Lyncis, "Request permission and clearance to land." "Permission granted Tigrisss. Clearance to land on Pad 26. Afterrr landing please rrreport to office of Ssspace Port Administratorrr.", is the reply I receive.

We land and exit the Tigris and make our way to the Port Administrator's office. As Sarrah and I walk through the Space Port, I notice many people staring at and quietly discussing us. I know a black furred Caitian, even a Star Fleet Officer is NOT an uncommon sight so I assume the people are surprised by the Orange Furred, Tiger Stripped Kzinrret that walks slightly to the left and three steps behind me.

Reaching the Port Administrator's Office, we go in. The Receptionist looks up and says, "Enter, he expecting you." I open the door and we enter. The back of the Administrator's chair is facing us but he begins, "Come in Commanderrr. We have had number of disturbing rrreports about you." My ears folding back rapidly in shock, I answer, "I have no idea what you are rrreferring to sirrr!" "Theft of Federation property, transporting proven dangerousss life formsss are among most ssserous of accusationsss . . . BUT then what can be expected of crrrazy, old, Caitian. Right Uncle Sef?", the Administrator says as he turns to face Sarrah and I. "L'Set!", I say as I recognize the owner of the voice, the Grandson of my older sister, "Always the tricksterrr!" L'Set stands, his tail curling in amusement, walks up to me, grabs me by the shoulder and Bumps Heads with me. "And thisss must be Aunt Sarrah!", L'Set says as he bows toward Sarrah. "I Kzinti! Not Insect!", Sarrah replies, not understanding the Human homophone. "No Sarrah. Insect spelled "ANT". L'Set referring to mate of Uncle.", I explain before I realize what I just said. Sarrah looks at me questionly so I say, "I will explain it laterrr Kitten." Hoping against hope that I can!

L'Set bids us to sit and orders refreshments as he continues, "I wanted to be first to greet you Uncle and warn you, your exploitsss have become legend on Feresa. There were some that wanted to greet yourrr arrival with public ceremony of sssome sort. I knew you would not have wanted such fusss so I discouraged that but you have MANY fansss! There WAS one request that I could NOT rrrefuse nor did I think you would have wanted rrrefused . . . Lady M'Rress would like to sssee you after you get sssettled in." Happy to hear my old ship mate, mentor and Feresa's distinguished, formerrr member of the Federation High Council was still around and wanting to see me, I quickly agree.

"D'Fellah (the sister we are here for's Grandson) is on his way. I informed him of yourrr impending arrival but farm isss over 45 Cycles (minutes) away ssso getting here will take sssome time.", L'Set explains, changing the subject.

Through L'Set I get caught up on the family happenings and get an idea of what is planned for the memorial.

"Administratorrr", L'Set's Receptionist interrupts on the office com net, "D'Fellah has arrived." "Good! Sssend him in!", L'Set responds. My youngest sister, H'Mest married into a very old, very wealthy and very powerful landed Caitian family. D'Fellah lives on and manages one of their large agricultural operations near the Capital and that is where her memorial will take place in a few days. "Uncle Sef!", D'Fellah yells as he enters and goes straight to Sarrah for an embrace, "You have not changed a bit!" Sarrah is a bit tense until she sees amusement displayed in his curling tail. "Our family is truly blessed!", I comment, as I grab him away from Sarrah and bump heads with him, "WITH TWO TRICKSTERS!" I try to explain to Sarrah what is going on but, with her ears and tail twitching with laughter, she says, "Tosh (male)-family are the same everywhere! My Lord!" She then she again surprisers me by pulling D'Fellah to her for a proper hug.

L'Set questions D'Fellah as to whether he is in a hurry to get back to the farm or has time to sit and visit, he has time, so we all sit down again. D'Fellah goes into detail about the planned memorial including the impressive guest list that includes several high government officials, active and retired as well as members of both the Caitian and Federation Star Fleets. Then he surprises me by saying, "Of course Uncle Sef, asss oldest memberrr of family now you will be honored in leading memorial ceremoniesss." I had NOT planned on this BUT, I understand tradition so I silently except the honor. After a bit more conversation, D'Fellah observes, "It getting late and journey to farm isss long. I know you and Sarrah want to get settled and rrrest after your long trip." We say our goodbys and head for D'Fellah's transport vehicle. We make a stop at the Tigris to pick up our luggage and then head west, out of the city, toward the Cold Foot Mountains. The farm is located in the foothills.

Feresa is a beautiful place and only gets more beautiful as one leaves the cities. It is planting season and in every field work is being done. Sarrah, never having seen farming has many questions. What ones I can not answer D'Fellah does.

The "FAMILY FARM" occupies almost thirty square miles of cleared, farm land and another forty of managed forest. The Main House sits in the center of the cleared land. Around the Main House there is a small village of other buildings used for Worker Housing, Equipment Storage/Maintenance, Product Warehousing, and all other needs of a modern farm.

As we approach, we see there is a large gathering of people in front of the house. "I sssorry Uncle Sef!", D'Fellah says as we come to a stop, "I told them not to bother you and Sarrah until you have had chance to rrrest!" "No problem D'Fellah.", I answer as I open the transport's door. Most of the crowd are relatives that have and are gathering for the memorial service, some of the older ones I recognize. When I took a year off after reentering Starfleet Academy to update my training in 2371 they were kits! The confusion ends as a loud, powerful and female voice strikes out saying, "ENOUGH! You will have plenty of time with Commanderrr D'Sefet! For now give HIM sssome peace!" I look to see the voice is that of D'Fellah's mother M'Mut. She wades through the crowd, wraps her arms around me and says, "Mmerrrv (welcome) home Sef!" Releasing me, she turns to Sarrah and says, "And thisss must be Kzinrret we have all heard about!" Wrapping her arms around Sarrah, M'Mut says, "Mmerrrv (welcome) to mmmy home Sarrah."

With M'Mut leading the way and D'Fellah bringing up the rear, carrying the luggage we are escorted into the house and shown to "OUR" room. After we are left alone and Sarrah is sure everyone is out of ear shot she begins, mostly in Kzinti, "Ta'k (she) hrung (thinks) k'tze (I) ch'rowl (have sex/mate) with chojj (you) My Lord! To'kzi (they) all do!" Sarrah's fur begins to flatten and her tail lashes about wildly, I can tell she is worried. "I know Sarrah! When I wrote H'Mest telling her about how you entered my life I guesss I did NOT think they would assume we became mates! What you want me to do?", I ask as I take note of the king size single bed, "I am sure house is full up with guests but I can find bunk sssomewhere." "Well . . . ", she begins as I note a slight lidding of her eyelids (Slyness), "K'tze (I) WAS always taught that chss (no) smart Kzinrett would throw a big, strong, hansom, important T'kzintar (warrior) out of her bed! If chojj (you) swear chssee (not) to treat me as a Prret (concubine) and keep your skceri (penis) under control K'tze (I) guess chojj (you) can stay My Lord." As her tail and ears begin twitching with laughter, I bow and say, "Thank you, gracious AUNT Sarrah! But you keep that tail tip of yoursss underrr control too!"

A normal Caitian family usually eats a sit down dinner together. However with a house full of guests of all ages, dining has been modified. Food selections are put out on long tables and a person serves themselves. The young, with all their energy, eat first so they can be gotten out of the way. Then it is the adults turn to gather their food and find a quiet place to eat. There is so much food one does not know where to begin! As Sarrah stands at the tables she seems to be having a hard time choosing. "I sssorry for poorrr choice of meatsss Sarrah.", M'Mut like a true hostess begins, "We understand Kzinti are not grass eatersss! We tried to orderrr some Zianya meat but could not find supplier in Federation." "Please! Do not be sorry M'Mut- My Lady! There are many things here I like or after hearing what My Lord has said about them, want to try but with so many choices I do not know where to begin!", Sarrah explains. Finally, with my help she fills her plate and we find a place to eat.

I tried to find a quiet place for just Sarrah and I but, some of the older kits joined us. From their questions I find they have been following my career closer than expected! "Do you Really have a Borg as Friend?" "How close is FI-9 to Kzinti Homeworld? and "Does it REALLY look like paw print floating in space?" are just some of the questions I try and answer. There is a theory that Caitians are related to Kzinti just as Vulcans are related to Romulans. Because the Kzinti have had little contact with Ka'sskin (aliens), Sarrah is the first living Kzinti the kits or for that matter ANY Caitian have seen. The kits have been taught what little is known about them including that kzinrrets have minimal intelligence but when they find out Sarrah is "different" and her brother is Chief of Security on FI-9 she gets more questions that I do! I find to my surprise that Sarrah, who spent most of her life sequestered in a hareem, knows more about Kzinti Society than I thought. The questions, some about family history that I am not prepared to talk about, out last the food and although both Sarrah and I do not mind satisfying the kit's curiosity, it is M'Mut that thankfully ends the meeting by shooing the kits away.

The memorial is day after tomorrow and I was surprised by being told that, as the oldest family member, I would be leading the ceremonies! I was NOT prepared for this! We leave the Dining Room and Sarrah starts for the room, seeing that I am heading in a different direction she says, "Our room is this way My Lord!" "I know Sarrah.", I answer sounding even to me, a bit dejected. "What is the problem My Lord?", she asks, her fur flattening and tail moving with worry, "Where are you going? Have you chosen not to spend the night with me? Have I offended you?" "No kitten.", I comfort, pointing toward the trees not to far away, "I thought I would take little walk! It not often I can go forrr walk in forest without carrying Phaserrr!" "May I be permitted to accompany you My Lord?", Sarrah asks. "Of course Kitten!", I answer, taking her paw in mine.

What seems like a long time ago, I took command of FI-9 and met my first Kzinti, Security-Chief. His untamed, primal, Kzinti outlook on life had an effect on this "Domesticated" felinoid and as I observed, as I went about marking the station so its Kzinti computers would recognize me in command, I found myself experiencing a unfamiliar, wild, almost primal feeling. It was as if the station disappeared and I was transported back to the primordial jungle my prehistoric ancestors prowled. I could almost feel the weight of hundreds of pairs of fearful eyes watching as THE CAITIAN begins the patrol of HIS territory! Now, with a strong, beautiful, loving, sexy Kzinti Kzinrret by my side, in this lush, green, pristine forest, I no longer have to imagine how my prehistoric ancestors must have felt! IT IS GLORIOUS!

We wonder the forest for what seems like hours. It grows dark but both of Ferasa's moons, Rea and Sura rise in their full phase giving the two prowling felines plenty of light. We stop to rest in a small clearing, Sarrah and I sit on an old, fallen tree trunk, under the stars, in the middle of a grassy meadow filled with scented wild flowers. I reach out and pull Sarrah to me and hold her in my arms. It is fortunate that I am a Caitian and NOT a Kzinti as well as a Star Fleet Officer. For in that moment, in that place, with that female with all the scents swirling around us, if I had not been, I would have found it impossible to keep my "skceri (penis)" under control! I make a mental note to get a scan of this place so Sarrah and I can enjoy it again in the Holodeck when we return to FI-9. I will call the program, "A Night In Cat Mint Meadow".

We sleep late the next morning, lovingly entwined in each other's arms. Reluctantly I get up, leaving Sarrah sleeping. I go get some food and returning to our room, Sarrah and I have breakfast in bed. While getting the food, I sent and received a message. After breakfast, when we are prepared for the day, I borrow a transport and Sarrah and I head into the city.

Lady M'Ress, for all her achievements, Star Fleet Officer, retiring with the rank Admiral, long member of the Federation High Council, lives in a modest dwelling on a quiet street in Feresa's Capital city. It is so unassuming that after all the things I told Sarrah about her, as we walked up the walkway to the entrance, she asked, her ears and tail displaying disbelief, "This is where a great Lady of Feresa lives My Lord?" Not answering, I knock on the plain, wooden door. We hear sounds from inside and soon the door is opened by a Kit. "Greetings.", I begin but before I can say anything more the Kit's eyes grow wide and it says, "COMMANDERrr D'SEFET!" Then it turns and runs, yelling as it does, "Gurrr Ma! He REALLY HERE!" Presently we see a young female approaching, "Please forgive my Kit Commanderrr, enter, my Grandmother isss in kitchen."

As she leads us through the house toward the back I observe the inside. It is as plain as the outside except the walls are festooned with a lifetime of memories. Everywhere there are holograms of M'Ress with famous people like President Kirk and Ambassador Spock. as well as citations, awards and medals. M'Ress is sitting at a simple wooden table, working on preparing some vegetables I assume she is planning on having for Mid-Meal. I recognize them as a pod bean that has to be snapped into sections before cooking. A chore I remember all to well from my years on my Father's farm! "Mmerrrv (welcome) Sef!", M'Ress says, "Please, you and Sarrah sssit!" I sit and as I do, a grab a paw full of unsnapped beans and begin working on them. I can feel the shock in the room until M'Ress, her tail displaying amusement purrs, "Just like old timesss, on Enterprise! On KP togetherrr again!"

"I not think there will be enough of these to feed us all! I rrremember you always had your plate piled high with them on Enterprise." M'Ress says looking at me, "M'Tress go out and pick anotherrr bowl and show Sarrah our garden, I am very proud of it!" "We had not planned to ssstay for Mid Meal M'Ress.", I begin, "We do not want you to go to any trouble!" "NONSENSE SEF!", M'Ress growls, "Besides what would we do with the Zianya Steaksss in the cooler!" " Zianya Steaks?", Sarrah questions, "I thought Zianya meat was unavailable in the Federation M'Ress- Lady." "Sef ssshould have told you Sarrah, Rank Has Its Privilegesss and Connectionsss!", M'Ress answers, "Besidesss I am sure my Grandkit hasss invited few of hisss friends over to meet you by now." Her Grandkit does not answer but his ears, tail and eyes confirm her suspicions. As M'Ress's Grandaughter, her kit and Sarrah exit she adds, "And ssstart grill ssso it will be ready for the sssteaks!", then to Sarrah, "Caitians, especially old onesss like me like ourrr meat sssoftened and warmed little by fire but you do not have to have yoursss cooked." "Thank you M'Ress-Lady but Kzinti DO like cooked meat! I think the fire brings out the flavor but I do like my meat as the Humans say Blood Rare!"

After the group leaves, "I want to ssspeak to you about something very important Sef.", M'Ress begins, "I hope I not out of place but I want to encourage you to considerrr leaving Starfleet at some point and rrrepresenting Feresa on Federation Council." "I warriorrr not diplomat.", I answer, a bit stunned by her request. "That ISss what I thought at one time too!", she says, adding, "I not asking you rrresign your commission today Sef but keep idea in mind. Feresa and Federation need ones with experience like yoursss." " What about President Kirksss view that, once on bridge of ssship, one should not let anything rrremove you from it?", I question. "If you do yourrr job well, there will be sssomeone qualified to take your place therrre.", M'Ress wisely answers.

Mid Meal was leisurely and pleasant. AND YES, I did have a LARGE helping of beans! After, M'Ress's Grandkit's friends stopped by and request a story. I told them about the time M'Ress and I beamed down to a planet with Captain Kirk and found it populated only by males! M'Ress was a bit panicky that I would add the part where she ended up in bed with Captain Kirk so he could "protect" her from the other male's advances but I left that out. They also had a LOT of questions about FI-9 which I did my best to answer.

We spent much of the morning and afternoon at M'Ress's but, "It hasss been wonderful ssseeing you again M'Ress but we ssshould be getting back to farm.", I say, "I have to get rrready to lead ssservice tomorrow." "Of course Sef, I am glad I got chance to sssee you again." "I wish to thank you for your hospitality M'Ress-Lady. The Zianya was delicious!", Sarrah adds, " Will you be attending the service?" "I plan to.", M'Ress says, "But at my age you learn plansss can change from hourrr to hourrr." We finish our goodbys and the last thing M'Ress says is, "Please considerrr our talk Sef." I promise I will.

Activity at the farm has really ramped up since Sarrah and I left. Caitian funerals, by tradition, begin at sun down. Fires are lit on the alters to light the departed's way through the underworld. Now, late afternoon there is only a little more than 24 hours to put the finishing details on the service!

One of the large warehouses had been converted into a auditorium and as I arrive I am told D'Fellah is there waiting for me. "Prrre (greetings/hello) Uncle Sef.", D'Fellah begins, "Did you enjoy visit with M'Ress?" "Yes." , I answer, "It good to sssee old ship matesss again. You wanted to sssee me?" "Yes, I gathered from your rrreaction to my informing you that as oldest memberrr of family you will be leading memorial ceremoniesss that you were unprepared forrr honor." "Well it was just that I have not attended many Caitian funeralsss I am not sssure what expected of me.", I explain. "I thought asss much. I prepared an outline of ssservice and what you need to be aware of.", D'Fellah says, handing me the civilian equivalent of a Starfleet Padd. "Good. ", I answer, glancing at the Padd, "I will rrreview it and get back with you if any questionsss or problemsss arise." "I am at your ssservice uncle.", He says adding, "Just rrremember, none of thisss is about show! All thisss IS about family saying rrr'me (goodbye) to someone they loved. Although I am sure if sssomething goes wrong, mother will hisss about it for rrrest of her life! Ssso no pressure uncle!" The curling of his tail in amusement indicates he is, at least half joking.

I go back to the room to study the information. There I find Sarrah stretched out on the bed taking a nap. Basically I will be the "Master of the Ceremony" I will begin it by greeting the family and visitors then there will be a video tribute to H'Mest, who's body has been kept in stasis since she died and will be displayed in front of the dias. After the tribute anyone that wishes to can address the assembled with memories and stories about H'Mest. Finally it will be my turn to address the assembly. Then the family will escort the body to the family mausoleum and inter it. So my only problem is what I am going to say.

It proves to be a BIG problem. As Commanding Officer I have had the task to write to the relatives of a crew member killed in the line of duty, thankfully ONLY a few times. I do try and get to know the people I command but other than the Command Crew, most do not remain long enough to get to know well so the letters are mostly written to give the relatives comfort from the impression that their family member was more than a part in a machine.

I think back to when H'Mest was born. I was four years old and conflicted. I was the "Baby" of the family and by default got most of the attention BUT I also was the living "BABY" my seven and nine year old sisters played house with! By the age of four and a male, I had grown tired of being dressed up and wheeled around to give my sisters "practice" for when they became mothers. I was all to happy to give up that role to someone else! H'Mest was a sweet, quiet kit, the translation of her name, House-baby girl, reflecting the sentiment. Always purring even if she had a reason to hiss. She idolized her older brother and because we were closer in age to each other than our older sisters, tended to do "things", re getting into trouble, together. When I became the first of our family to be accepted to Star Fleet Academy none was prouder than H'Mest. She also was more sadder that I was leaving Ferasa than the rest of the family as well. She dreamed of following her big brother into Starfleet when it was her time but, "things" did not work out. Things? I wonder if I should go into the thing that destroyed my little sister's dream of going into space? Officially the reason was that she had almost no sight in her left eye. And in the days BEFORE artificial eyes that was a problem! It is HOW she lost the sight that has been and still IS secret only whispered about by the family!

It was in the spring, I was preparing to leave for the Academy after harvest. The year, 2264 to be exact and even though the Organia Incident with Captain Kirk, the Enterprise and the Klingons was three years away (2267), there were things that happened.

It was the last day of the work week. Mother and my older sisters had gone into town for supplies and Father was in the fields. Normally H'Mest, 14 would have gone along with Mother and I, 18 would have been in the fields with Father but H'Mest was not feeling well so she was left home and I was assigned to keep an eye on her. The how and why of what happened was never explained, to me anyway. I was in the barn working when it began. I heard a sound, turned around, thinking it was H'Mest and was flattened by a unseen blow. When I regained consciousness I was on the ground looking up at a Klingon Soldier with a Disruptor. I had been lucky, I was relatively unhurt, the left side of my body was kind of numb and my left arm hurt BUT I WAS alive! I looked around for a weapon but the only item within reach was the Pitch Fork I had been using. The Klingon's Communicator beeped and he began speaking to another Soldier. I knew enough Klingon to gather the other Soldier was also somewhere on the farm, H'Mest I thought, my panic beginning to grow! Finishing his communication, he raises his weapon, points it at me and I am sure I am dead. All of a sudden I hear a loud hiss, the Klingon starts to turn in the direction of the sound and is immediately propelled forward by the impact of the body of the owner of that hiss H'Mest! The Klingon's Disruptor and Communicator go flying as my little sister attaches herself to the Klingon's head and body with VERY sharp derrrinas (claws). He strikes at her with his hands and finally manages to loosen her grip on him. He flings her off, her derrrinas (claws) leaving eight long, deep, pink bloody, marks on his head and giving her the name I would, from then on call her, Pink Derrrina (Claw) and she crashes onto the ground. By now I have struggled to my feet, grabbed the Pitch Fork and before the Klingon can do anything else, I run him through with all my strength. He drops to his knees and I finish him, by puncturing his heart with his own knife. I find his Disruptor and check on H'Mest. She is hurt but alive. I tell her to stay put and that there is another Klingon somewhere near by. She tells me he was in the kitchen. I ask if she saw other Klingons too but she says she had seen only the two. I know I have to get her to safety and warn the authorities about the invasion so with the Disruptor in hand, I go looking for the other Klingon. He is just coming out the back door probably heading to the barn to find his comrade. Not being familiar with alien weapon and by now not caring, I aim the weapon at the him and pull the trigger. He melts as the beam hits him and disappears into nothingness. In the field next to the house is a small vessel with Klingon markings on it. I assume it is how they got here. After checking it and the house for other Klingons, I return to the barn for H'Mest.

Before moving her I needed to see how bad she was hurt. The Klingon had hit her with his fists a number of times. The sharp parts of his gloves tore her clothes and scratched her but not as deeply as her derrrinas (claws) had the Klingon's head. She had hit the rock hard earth of the barn's floor hard on her left side. It appeared her left arm was broken and the left side of her head was beginning to swell. When I tried to move her she grabbed at the left side of the chest leading me to think some of her ribs were also broken. As I am trying to think of what to do next, go get Father, go get medical help, notify the authorities, or get ready to kill more Klingons, I hear a number of small vessels fly over the barn and a few of them land! I get ready to kill more Klingons until I hear the mmerrrv (welcome) sound of Caitian voices. In seconds Caitian warriors are with us. One tends to H'Mest and one examines me. Two others are checking the dead Klingon. The warrior helping me sees I am in pain and administers a hypospray of pain med so the rest of the events are a bit confused. The Caitian Commander tells me Father saw the Klingon vessel land and went to the neighboring farm to raise the alarm. Father knew H'Mest and I were home and wanted to try and help us but the neighbor would not let him, convincing Father that even Caitian Kits were smarter than Klingons and would be ok. I also tell him that I disintegrated one of the Klingons.

After what seemed like forever, a Ground Transport arrives and H'Mest and I are taken to the Med Center in town. There the entire family is reunited. My injuries consist of a LOT of bumps and bruises as well as a dislocated left shoulder. Pink Derrrina (Claw), H'Mest was not as lucky. A broken left arm and three broken ribs on the left side as well as numerous scratches and bruises are her minor injuries. But it is her head that the Healers are most concerned with. At first they thought her skull might have been fractured but scans do not show that. They DO however show she has a severe concussion and that the orbit of her left eye socket had been shattered. There is also damage to her left eye.

The family stayed in town for a few days while Caitian Warriors checked the planet for other Klingon invaders and found none. Then Father and my two older sisters returned to the farm. H'Mest had to stay for treatment and Mother stayed with her. I wanted to return to the farm as well but Father took me aside and said proudly that he wanted his son, the Caitian, Starfleet Warrior to stay and protect his Kit and Mate.

I wrote the entire story on the Padd. As far as I know it IS the first time what happened that day has been recorded. To keep panic to a minimum, at the time most of the event was classified and my family and I were cautioned not to talk about it. When I became a Star Fleet Officer I tried to have a look at the official records and found them missing. Even H'Mest's injuries were reported as a "Farm Accident".

As I finish the story, Sarrah wakes up, "My Lord! I am sorry! I did not hear you enter!" "Not problem Kitten, if I had not needed to prepare forrr ceremony I would have joined you forrr nap.", I answer showing her the Padd. "May I see what you are working on My Lord?", Sarrah asks. "Of course!", I say handing her the Padd, "In fact I would like to hearrr any of yourrr ideasss."

I watch Sarrah's body language as she reads the story. When she finishes, she looks up from the Padd at me and I say, "I am lucky to have had two female T'kzintarrr (warrior) in my life protect me when I needed it the most."

All of a sudden Sarrah drops the Padd on the bed and begins to quiver. I go to her and gather her in my arms. She buries her nose in the fur of my neck and begins to breath heavy and softly mew, the Kzinti equivalent of human crying. "I am sorrry Kitten! I did not mean to upset you!", I comfort as I stroke the fur on the back of her head with my hand. "No My Lord, it is I that should beg forgiveness!", She begins, as she lifts her head up and looks at me with tear filled eyes, "From you, Jacobs-Lieutenant Commander and Selar-Doctor! Ever since that night I almost let that Trill kill you I have been terrible to my friends!" "No you have not!", I say as I sit both of us down on the bed, "You did NOT let that Trill do ANYTHING! In fact you did great deal to prevent Galactic Warrr that night!" "I know you have been told of my actions after the Trill shot you! I know Jacobs-Lieutenant Commander told you how I attacked her when she was trying to help! I know. . . " "I Know Sarrah!", I begin, interrupting her, "I know that unarmed, you killed armed intruderrr you though had just killed me! I know you followed protocol by putting out medical emergency and sssecurity breach call! I know you protected helpless me at time when no one could be completely trusted! AND yourrr friendsss KNOW IT TOO! When I questioned Jacobsss about you attacking herrr she said, ""I LOVE HERrr! She ISss STILL the sssister AND the kitten I never had! I know she loves me! That's what makesss this all so frustrating, how you damn CATSss hide yourrr pain, bearing it alone!""Their ONLY concern ISss what bothering you now. Even Security-Chief, while proud of yourrr actions ISss concerned!" I nuzzle Sarrah's soft, warm neck fur and say, "Jacobsss is correct, it IS frustrating, how Felinesss hide ourrr pain and I understand why but YOU DO NOT have to bearing it alone! Not any more! Not asss long asss I am here!"

Felines do not as a rule touch mouths. About the closest we have ever come is smelling each other's mouth to see what the other has been eating BUT I HAVE been around Humans a LONG time so, gently cradling her head in my paws, I move my head closer until our lips touch. It is NOT an unpleasant sensation and I can see why Humans seem to enjoy the experience.

"When Jacobs - Lieutenant Commander arrived I thought you WERE dead My Lord! The smell of burnt fur was heavy in the air!", Sarrah continues to explains, "I do not think I would have injured her but I could NOT control myself!" "I understand Kitten! It IS always ssstruggle forrr anyone to control oneself in sssuch situationsss!", I say. "I think it IS harder for me after what happened to my Brother.", she counters. "What happened to Security-Chief?", I ask. "Not him My Lord, our older Brother.", she answers, continuing, "He was Annah's first kit, strong and brave yet kind, caring, gentle and smart! He was destine for greatness! Mother thought he would earn his name faster than any Kzinti ever had! We all were with Father on a remote Kzinti outpost he was commanding. Brother had just finished Training as a Flyer (Starship Helmsman) and was going to leave aboard the next ship that came to the outpost. He disdained dueling and both Mother and I am sure that if he had accidentally insulted another's honor he would have immediately begged for forgiveness. So what happened still puzzles me." Sarrah continues telling me the story of the dark day when some of her Brother's friends carried him to their quarters. He had been in a fight! With whom she was never told. But whoever it was, he had won! "His soft, beautiful fur was torn out and bloodied, he was missing his right ear, taken, I guess by the victor. He was having trouble breathing and coughing up blood. I heard one of his friends ask if a Healer had been sent for and another one answer that he was away and would not arrive for hours! Even then I was interested in healing and had secretly studied it. I think I could have saved him! BUT if I had tried, my intelligence would have been exposed and so would have been Mother's as well and you know what the Kzintosh do to smart Kzinrrets!", she asks. I nod and Sarrah continues,"Hs friends just stood around watching my Brother die, as did Mother and I! Brother was still alive when the Healer DID FINALLY arrive but by then Brother was so weak there was little he could do. If I had done something sooner Brother might have had a chance for life! So when that Trill attacked you My Lord and I could not stop him, all that feeling of uselessness came back! I thought that for a second time I had let someone I loved die!" "Humans have sssaying, If Wantsss Werrre Horses, Beggarrrs Would Be Kingsss.", I tell her. Looking at me, her eyes saying he does not understand, I explain, "It meansss sometimes one can not get what one desirrres, sssometimes Great Fanged One hasss otherrr plansss! You are correct, if you had helped yourrr Brotherrr you WOULD have been found out and killed, then Trill would have been sssuccessful and The Bugsss would now be in control of Galaxy! More importantly and ssselfishly, I would not be able to hold you in my arms now!"

Early the next morning I send a message to an old friend requesting help with an old report. A few hours later I get the reply I expected. I spend some time getting Sarrah, who will be seated on the dias with me, and my clothes ready for the Ceremony. I will wear my Dress Uniform and Sarrah has chosen a modest, floor length, grey dress that looks good in contrast to her orange, tiger stripped fur.

At sun down. M'Mut and D'Fellah light the fires on the alters and I begin the service. First I greet the family and the LONG list of visitors, both distinguished and humble. Then the video tribute to H'Mest, begins. After it ends I invite anyone to share their memories and stories about H'Mest with everyone. Finally is my turn to address the assembly. "Pink Derrrina (Claw) wasss my baby sisterrr.", I begin as I hear an audible gasp from the audience, "Many knew she had been called that forrr yearsss and many of you wondered why she would let only one, me addresss herrr so." I look over at M'Mut remembering what D'Fellah had said about something going wrong, she is sitting calmly in her seat. "She wasss beautiful, Caitian female, loving motherrr and mate BUT the heart of ourrr Kzinti ancestorsss beat in herrr chest! The ssstory I am about to tell you was declassified few hours ago by President Kirk himself!", I continue to more gasps, "It began long time ago, on warm, ssspring day. A day not unlike thisss one in 2264."

I finish the story to dead silence from the audience! Then the Klingon Ambassador to Ferasa stands, yells, in Klingon, "I honor the Caitian Warror as she takes her rightful place in Sto'Vo'Kor!" and begins to clap loudly! The rest of the audience joins him and the standing ovation lasts for over five minutes! I again have a look at M'Mut, she is crying but her tail indicates inside she is happy! The ovation would have lasted longer but I, holding up a paw interrupt, "My family and I thank you all forrr attending! Now please enjoy rrreception we have prepared forrr you! The family and I will join you asss soon asss we sssee H'Mest to herrr final rrrest."

"Sef, may I ssspeak with you?", M'Mut asks as we stand before the family mausoleum waiting for it to be opened. "Of courssse!", I answer. "H'Mest had one last, life long rrrequest we could not grant.", she explains, "And we werrre not sssure you could attend ssservice, but . . ." My sister NEVER gave up the idea of serving Ferasa in Starfleet and traveling through the stars. For one of their anniversaries her mate had taken her on an inter-planetary cruise but a big passenger ship with lots of people was NOT the same as a STAR SHIP! Just before her death she had expressed a hope that in her next incarnation the Masters would grant her that wish. M'Mut continues, "But with no assurance of that, family jerked a few lines (pulled a few strings, Sef is NOT the only Caitian that has problems with human euphemisms!) and because of importance surrounding incident that rrresulted in herrr injury, we were able to arrange. . . " "I got herrr an appointment to Academy, posthumously, Sef!", M'Ress says as she steps into the light. I am stunned, my ears and tail display my disbelief. "There isss one otherrr thing Sef.", M'Mut adds, "Could you, Would you take motherrr for last rrride on your ssship? Asss cadet?" I am almost speechless! BUT, I begin, "I am not sssure . . ." "It not problem Sef.", M'Ress assures, "In fact you will log it asss orderrr from sssuperior officerrr! Remember what I told Sarrah about rrrank! I will come along as observerrr." "Well I neverrr have yet rrrefused to follow orderrr of sssuperior!", I say, "What is plan?"

The plan is simple, all arraigned by Space Port Administrator L'Set, unofficially of course! I will be transported to the Space Port on a private air transport owned by one of the high government officials that attended the memorial and return in the Tigris. While I am doing that they will get H'Mest dressed in her uniform and to make things official M'Ress will also change into her uniform. I will remain in orbit and beam M'Ress and H'Mest's body aboard and go for a leisurely trip through the star system of 15 Lyncis, a hour or so trip on Impulse Drive. Then we will return, I will beam M'Ress and H'Mest's body back to the farm. I will return the Tigris to the Space Port and I will get ride from a high ranking member of the Caitian Star Fleet back to the farm. Once I return, H'Mest will be interred with full military honors.

The plan goes off without a hitch! Offically the flight was explained as me making sure the Tigris was ready for the trip back to FI-9. After beaming M'Ress and H'Mest's body aboard I strapped the body in the front co-pilot's seat. M'Ress asked if she could pilot the ship and since she was a Superior Officer I let her! I sit down in one of the other seats. I asked Sarrah if she wanted to come but she declined which was just as well, D'Fellah promised he would be her escort to the reception until I returned.

"It comforting to know piloting ssskills do not diminish with yearsss.", I comment to M'Ress as she flies the Tigris through the solar system. "To be truthful Sef, I have been practicing on flight sssimulator my Grandkit got for me. These Runabouts sssure handle differently compared to old Class F Shuttlecraft!", M'Ress confesses, her tail indicating amusement. I sit back and enjoy the ride.

As we once again enter Ferasa orbit I become aware of another presence on the ship. I turn and see Mother standing behind H'Mest's seat looking at me serenely. As I watch, I see H'Mest rise out of her seat and stand beside mother. She is young again! She looks like she did when she was 18 and traveled to Earth by herself to attend my graduation from Star Fleet Academy. I remember the day and how proudly I showed her off and around. Even though a happy time, there was sadness that she would not get her time there. As she stands beside Mother she indicates her Cadet Uniform to me, her ears and tail showing her happiness. M'Ress seems busy establishing orbit so not to distract her I mouth the words rrr'me (goodbye) Pink Derrrina (Claw). For a moment in response, she bears her fangs and claws as her tail laughs. Then Mother takes her by the hand and they disappear. "Sef? Are you alright?", M'Ress questions bringing me back to reality. "What? Oh yesss M'Ress I am sorry. I wasss lost in the view.", I explain. "I forgot just how beautiful it wasss!", M'Ress comments, then, "We are almost overrr farm, are you rrready to beam H'Mest and me down?"

I was, then I returned the Tigris to the Space Port and in less than a half hour I was back at the Farm. After a intimate, military interment ceremony attended by the family, M'Ress and a representative of the Federation and Caitian Star Fleets, we all join the other guests at the reception.

Sarrah did not attend the interment, that Kzinti graveyard superstition thing. So she is waiting for me at the reception. She asks, "Did H'Mest and your mother enjoy the ride?" "Yes." I answer, before I realize WHAT she just asked! Before I can question her more, D'Fellah walks up. "Hey Uncle Sef!", he begins, slipping his arm around Sarrah's middle, "If any Kzintosh everrr offerrr you anotherrr Kzinrret, keep me in mind!" Sarrah gently swats at him and releasing her he continues on his way, his tail curling with amusement. "A changed Kzinrret would kill him in the first five minutes of their first night of ch'rowling (having sex/mate)!", Sarrah comments with all sincerity, "We will have to find him one like me My Lord!" Before I can question her on THAT subject M'Ress walks over, "You plan to ssstay while do you not Sef?" This is first leave I have had since taking command of FI-9 so I answer, "I do not think I will be missed on FI-9 for few extra daysss anyway. If M'Mut can ssstand us that is!" Hearing her name, M'Mut joins us, "What this? I heard my name!" "I was just telling M'Ress, Sarrah and I might ssstay on Ferasa few more days if you can ssstand us around M'Mut.", I joke. "Well, Sarrah IS always mmerrrv (welcome)! One can never have enough strong females in family but . . . You . . .", M'Mut answers, her tail curling, "A lazy old male . . ." "My Lord D'Sefet HAS other uses!", Sarrah defends with lidded eyelids (Slyness). We all share the joke and then M'Ress says, "Good, I have sssome friends otherrr than my Grandkit's that want to meet you Sef and one friend that I think Sarrah should meet. I will arrange a get togetherrr at my house in a few daysss." "Soundsss good.", I answer, "I want to show Sarrah some the sssights on Ferasa too."

Besides some of the kerrosat (traveler/tourist) attractions I want to show her one special place. The day after the Funeral I again borrow a Transport. This time our destination is a sprawling housing subdivision. After I was"Lost" and Father died there was no male interested in taking over the Farm so it was sold. At the time it was fashionable to live in a unattached dwelling of one's own so farm land was being converted into land for housing and that was the fate our Farm suffered. Using PLS (Planetary Location System) and some old maps, I have found the land our Farm once stood on and I want to show Sarrah.

"There isss where house stood and over there barn.", I say as, using the PLS, I point out the locations. Sarrah and I walk a little distance and I continue, "Just down hill is ssstream where farm's livestock drank and . . ." I can not believe my eyes! On the bank of the stream! A Wacher tree! My Wacher tree and held in its branches, MY tree house! Sarrah and I walk up to the door of the house the tree is on and knock. The owner answers, and although I introduce Sarrah and myself he seems to know us. I explain why we are there and ask if I might be permitted to have a look at the tree and tree house, the stunned owner is very happy to allow that. He tells us that the tree house had been there ever since his parents bought the house but he has a hard time believing it is mine. I tell him there is one way to find out, I marked the tree house with a special series of scratches in a certain spot, sort of a signature proving I built it. With difficulty I climb the tree and look into the tree house, there on one of the support boards are the marks I made more than 100 years before!

The next day M'Ress informs me of the arraignments she has made for the get together. I tell her NOT to over tax herself and she replies that it is mostly her daughter making the preparation as she says, "I give ordersss and my crew carry them out, as it should be!"

M'Ress invited the family to the get together but M'Mut was recovering from organizing the Memorial Ceremony and D'Fellah had put off farm chores he had to catch up on so besides me only L'Set the administrator attended, he came to as he said, "make connections".

The friend M'Ress thought Sarrah should meet is a Healer that specializes in helping ones with emotional problems much like a Ship's Councilor. I am not sure how M'Ress knew about the problems Sarrah was having but I was happy for the help. He talked with Sarrah alone for an hour or so. I think this trip where she seemed to open up a little coupled with his words and my support let Sarrah feel better and begin to put the past behind her. I think everyone enjoyed the affair, I know I did.

We stayed on Ferasa another two days but as it must time came for us to leave. "I am sssorry Uncle.", L'Set says as we look at the number of people gathered, "I do not know how they found out you were leaving! I can have Security clearrr them away!" I do not understand why there is so much interest in my career but I remember feeling the same about others and remember their patients with me so I answer, "No, I will ssspeak with them but when Tigris takes off make sure Security keeps them safe distance away! Many were here to see Sarrah. I saw a number of them just reach out and gently touch her orange striped fur as if they were trying to confirm she was real. One cute, little, male kit yelled, "Hey Lady Tigerrr!" and as Sarrah turned to look, he swiped the air with his little claws as his tail curling with joy. His reaction was priceless when Sarrah, claws hidden, swiped the air back at him and twitched her ears.

A news gather was waiting for me at the hatch on the Tigris's side and ask me the standard questions about the trip, has Ferasa changed much since I was last here, when do you think you will return, and the like. Then he stunned me by asking, "What are yourrr thoughts on rrreports that Patriarchy hasss contacted Federation about opening up theirrr territory to more contact?" "I have not as yet heard anything about it but, I am happy Kzinti are thinking about that!", I stammer remembering a talk I once had with a T'kzintar (warrior) about the Federation's greatest weapon. "Will you be involved? After all asss Ambassadorrr Spock once said, ""Only Nixon could go to China!""." "Orrr Only Kirk could go to Kronos!", I add, "I have and will continue to ssserve Federation and people of Ferasa in ANY way I am permitted to!"

Finally getting Sarrah on board and following her, I secure the Tigris's hatch and after Security moves the crowd back to a safe distance, fire up her engines. As the Tigris rises into the air, the crowd begins to "Kneed" the air, the Caitian way of waving. As a fighter pilot I know one way you have of acknowledging someone you are not in communication with is to "Waggle"your wings, that is to rock the vessel from side to side. And although the Tigris is a Runabout and not a Fighter I do manage to get her to "Waggle" a little to the crowd before we head into space. I heard their cheering through the hull!

On our way back, " You know Sarrah, I think FI-9 could ssspare us forrr another day or two." "What do you have in mind My Lord?, Sarrah questions. "WELL . . . Wrigley's Pleasure Planet isss not too farrr off ourrr course.", I answer. "Could we go there?", she asks, hardly believing what I have just said. "It IS height of theirrr ssseason and we have no reservations but I do not mind camping in Runabout if you do not.", I say. She answers me by wrapping her arms around me as I sit in the pilot's seat and nipping at my right ear.

The day after we return, "Sef! Are you sure you brought back the right Kzinrret? You know Bobby thought they all look the same didn't you?", Jacobs asks as we encounter each other for the first time on the Bazar. "I believe so Jacobsss. Why do you ask?", I say. "WELL, you left here with one VERY stressed out, high strung tigress, AND you returned with one VERY cool, laid back kitty! Even Doctor Selar commented to me on the change!", she explains, "What's more, she use to call me Jacobs-Lieutenant Commander even when we were alone, we were working out on the Holodeck this morning and she called me Jacobs four times!" "I hope, with luck, we will not have to sssee that Tigresss again any time sssoon! Howeverrr, I am sssure you will agree that IF we need herrr, I hope she appearrrs! ", I reply, Jacobs nods and I continue, "But, ssshe still needs all of ourrr supporrrt and understanding!" "She HAS HAD that from the day she took that note out of her mouth and put it in my tool box!', Jacobs says as she goes about her work.

Star Trek: Federation Installation Nine, Episode 20 Cloak Dagger

Cloak and Wtsai

"Uh Commander. . . May I speak with you", Gerve asks, poking his snouted head into my office as I am talking to Security-Chief and Jacobs. "Of course Gerve, come in", I answer. Gerve is followed in by two security guards, "Commander I. . . I mean, I have been ordered by. . ." "Get on with it", Security-Chief growls impatiently. Visibly shaken by Security-Chief's demeanor, Gerve continues, "Starfleet has ordered me to place you under arrest Commander." "What", Jacobs exclaims. "On WHAT charge Tellarite!", Security-Chief snarls so loudly that the two accompanying security guards involuntary reach for their Phasers. Bravely, Gerve answers, "War crimes." "ARE YOU MAD!", Jacobs questions. "I'm just following orders!", Gerve meekly counters. Confident of my innocence and, sympathizing with Gerve's position, I speak up, "How do you propose to proceeded Comanderrr?" From the look on his face, I perceive Gerve had NOT thought that far a head. Picking up on my line of thought, Security-Chief hisses, "Yes Gerve-Lieutenant Commander, do you wish to make use of one the cells in my office?" "Yes Gerve, slap on the cuffs!", Jacobs adds. "NO. . . I mean. . . I'm sure Starfleet had confinement to quarters until the Investigation Team arrives in mind when they gave the order.", Gerve stammers adding, "There was NO mention of 'cuffs' or even a tailor in the orders." Confinement to quarters. . . Leaving you in command", Security-Chief observes suspiciously as he rises from his chair, "Maybe I should have a look at those orders!"

Accompanying those orders is a vid. The vid is the basis for the war crimes charge. Even though it is well documented I spent the war on the Bozeman and Shadow Hawk, the vid shows me in charge of a secret Section 31 detainment camp during the war. There various scenes show me ordering or participating in mutilation, torture and murder. One particular scene shows me ordering all the Jem Hadar on a captured vessel killed so Section 31 could use the vessel while torturing the Cardassian officers that were on board. In another, I am shown torturing and questioning a rapidly drying out Founder using technology that prevents him from morphing into his liquid state.

Although all are appalled at the images, Security-Chief is the one that shows the strongest emotion. One might think that odd coming from a creature who's people would and have hunted and eaten humans but, regardless of your views on that, the Kzinti view torture of any kind and those that participate in it with great disdain.

For the moment, there is little to do but follow along with what is unfolding so I order the computer to transfer the Command Codes to Gerve and head for my quarters, escorted by the guards. "We'll get to the bottom of this Sef!", Jacobs shouts after me. "Yes D'Sefet-Commander, I will not rest until I rip the tongues from those that are spreading these lies!", Security-Chief pledges with a low growl as he eyes Gerve up and down.

After almost a week, the 'Investigation Team' has yet to arrive but, a familiar 'face' does make an unexpected appearance on FI-9.

"I'm looking for the chief of security, the odd looking human announces as he enters FI-9's Security Office. "That would be me", Security-Chief answers, wondering what this unusual appearing human wants. "My name's Odo, I'm with the Founders", Odo continues, "And YOU are?" "I am Security-Chief", is the answer he gets. "YES, but your name is", Odo questions, not familiar with the Kzinti tradition in names. "I am called Security-Chief", Security-Chief answers, a bit incensed. "Your name IS Security-Chief and you ARE the Chief of Security", Odo questions with growing confusion. "That is correct", Security-Chief answers. Abandoning this line of questioning and with his usual dead pan expression, Odo begins to explain why he's here and what he wants but, before he gets to far. "I knew it!", Jacobs exclaims as she bursts into the Security Office, "It's a fake!" Then seeing Odo, "Oh sorry Security-Chief, I figured you'd be alone." Security-Chief, a bit annoyed, answers, "What are you yowling about female?" Due to the current situation, Jacobs hesitates to discuss her discovery. Picking up on this Odo again introduces himself, "My name's Odo, I'm with the Founders. Now what's this about a fake?" "Odo? From Deep Space 9?", Jacobs questions. "I was formerly from there, do I know you?", Odo answers studying Jacobs' face. "No but, during the war, I was on a ship that operated out of DS9", Jacobs answers and turning to Security-Chief explains, "Security-Chief, Odo was Chief of Security on a space station called Deep Space 9." Although neither Jacobs or Odo realize it, this revelation has an effect on Security-Chief's trust of this Founder and he reiterates, "What is this about a fake?" Surprised by Security-Chief's trust in Odo and even more by her own, She answers, "This so called proof of Sef's war crimes, it's a holographic construct!" "How do you know that", Odo questions. "I viewed the vid second by second and about 45 minutes in I saw this", Jacobs produces the Tricorder she has been using and plays the vid. A few seconds in she stops it. "SEE!", she says. Apparently neither Odo or Security-Chief does so Jacobs prompts, "Look at Sef's hand eh!" Both Odo and Security-Chief move their faces closer to the Tricorder, what they see is my right paw/hand passing finger deep through the surface of the desk. "There must have been a power glitch in their HoloDeck", Jacobs theorizes, "If you are there you wouldn't notice it but, get a vid of it and. . ." "Why would anyone go to all that trouble to get D'Sefet-Commander removed from command", Security-Chief questions. "A good question Security-Chief and more over what is their next move", Odo adds. "We REALLY need to show Sef this eh", Jacobs says.

I am enjoying my 'arrest' IMMENSELY! I had forgotten what it was like not to have "Command" worries 25 hours a day. I almost feel sorry for Gerve as I picture him behind my desk stacked high with PADDS in my office. Also, although unlike my distant feline cousins that spend 16 hours a day napping, I DO enjoy what Caitians call the "Quiet Times", especially when Sarra joins me after she finishes her schooling. Sarra spends her day on "duty" in Sick Bay studying, learning and assisting with medical procedures. When the door buzzer sounds, I think it is Sarra even though it is a bit early for her.

I am surprised to find my visitors are Security-Chief, Jacobs and a strange looking human as I open the door. "You've got to see this Sef", Jacobs declares excitedly, holding up a Tricorder, as the group enters. It takes me a moment but, I recognize the strange looking human as Odo from DS9. After all are seated, I say, "I assume that whateverrr isss going on, presents of Odo indicatesss it lot biggerrr than first thought." Odo studies my face and says with a hint of sarcasm, "Don't tell me, you served on a vessel that operated out of DS9 during the war too." "No", I answer "But, I wasss Comunicationsss Oficerrr of U.S.S. Shadow Hawk when Founderrrs tried to sssabotage Federation/Romulan Alliance Treaty sssigning there." As Odo nods in remembrance, I say, "Now what isss it I need to sssee?" As Jacobs begins playing her discovery for me, Security-Chief comments, "It would appear you have been as they say 'Set Down' D'Sefet-Commander." "Up, Security-Chief!", Jacobs corrects and as he, not understanding, rises, she continues, "Sorry... No, the phrase is 'Set Up'." As Security-Chief, grumbling, sits back down, I am shown the mistake my accusers have made. As the vid ends, Security-Chief says, "Now all we have to find out who is doing all this and why it seems to be centered on you D'Sefet-Commander." "Logic would dictate this is bigger than just trying to remove one Starfleet Officer from his command and if whoever is behind this discovers their plans have been uncovered. . ." Odo theorizes. And then as an idea comes to mind, inquires, "Do you have a Phaser, Commander" I see Security-Chief's ears and tail display shock and disbelief as I cross the room and produce an old style Phaser 2 from the drawer of my desk. "Does THAT antique still work", Jacobs asks in amazement. I nod and add, "And it can not be deactivated by computerrr command like newerrr modelsss." "Shouldn't we tell Gerve about all this", Jacobs Questions. Tellarites make good officers. One reason they do is because as a race they have a tendency to follow orders first and question them later and Gerve is no exception. Although I sympathize with him and know how I would feel if our roles were reversed, I answer, "Forrr moment, fewerrr who know we know the betterrr." Both Odo and Security-Chief nod in agreement. "We DO howeverrr need to inform few friendsss. Although thisss doesss not sssmell like there isss Kzinti paw in it can you contact yourrr father and without rrrevealing to much find out forrr sssure and maybe get him to come to FI-9 on hisss battleship forrr an 'inspection'", I ask Security-Chief. As he nods, I continue, "There isss anotherrr personal friend that need to be informed and asssked forrr help, but it tooo rrrisky forrr you to try Jacobsss and we can not get Gerve to allow you to use Code 47 transmission. Odo, do you think you can use Founderrr Diplomatic Channelsss to inform. . ." I see all are impressed by the ones I can call friend.

"Commander! Can you come to Opps. . . IMMEDIATELY!", a frantic voice requests a few days later. "Of course Gerve, if guardsss will let me", I answer. "They have been removed Commander, please hurry", Gerve informs. Wondering what is happening I hurry to Opps. There the mystery deepens as I find in my office not only Gerve but Security-Chief, Jacobs and Odo. "What isss problem", I ask as I enter. "No one knows", Jacobs says with frustration showing in her voice. "YES, the Tellarite has NOT informed any of us", Security-Chief says, his voice echoing Jacobs frustration. "I'm not sure what the problem is Commander", Gerve begins, "I received this in a Code 47 transmission an hour ago" He paws me a Tricorder, on it are just five words, "BE READY AT 1400 HOURS". Handing the Tricorder to Security-Chief so he, Jacobs and Odo can read the message I ask, "Who sssent thisss." Gerve opens him mouth as if to say but no sound comes out, he just raises and lowers his shoulders and shakes his head. A human gesture I recognize as meaning he has no idea. Jacobs also recognizes the gesture and observes, "WELL it is almost 1400 now, we won't have long to wait!" We do not, almost before she has finished, the crewman catting the station's Scanners calls excitedly to us, "Commander, a disturbance off the Port Beam" "On Screen!", Gerve and I order almost simultaneously. As we all watch, the star field begins to shimmer and in it's place there appears a large, clearly marked Romulan vessel. Before anyone can react off to Starboard the stars again begin to shimmer and in their place another large Romulan vessel decloaks. "Shields. . .", Gerve begins to order but I interrupt him by observing, "That isss Shadow Hawk and Winterrr Hawk!" "Orderrr Bastet to ssstand by", I tell Gerve, not wanting this sudden appearance to panic what ever human in charge there into ill advised action. He does, not a moment to soon as both the Shadow and Winter Hawk launch all the Romulan and Federation Fighters they have on board. In moments FI-9 and the Bastet are ringed in all quadrants by vessels with Phasers and Disrupptors armed.

Without warning or communication four figures, weapons drawn materialize in front of us. Security-Chief reacts, instinctively reaching for his Phaser but fortunately I am beside him and restrain his paw. Two Romulan and two Federation officers in full Battle Armor survey the situation and deploy around the room. After taking readings with a Tricorder, when satisfied everything is ready, one taps his Communicator and reports, "All Secure."

Now we are joined by two more 'guests'. "My god!", I hear Jacobs exclaim softly as she recognizes one of our visitors. "Sorry for all the excitement Sef", my former commanding officer says. "Not problem Admiral T'Sarine. I welcome you and President Kirk to my formerrr command, FI-9", I answer. After short introductions, we all adjourn to Gerve's Office. Which, I am happy to say is much the same as I left it.

First order of business is to bring my Tellarite friend up to date as to the happenings going on in his Station. I can see he is stunned by the information and that he did not have any idea of the activity. I finish by saying, "I am sssorry that we did not include you in ourrr investigationsss Gerrrve but, we were not sssure what wasss going on orrr who we ssshould inform. Gerve, like a good officer, seems to understand and says he understands. Now it is Admiral T'Sarine's turn to brief ALL of us. We are told that there have been a series of occurrences that, though seemingly unrelated and some routine appearing have served to change key personnel and affect strategic vessels. The item that brought all the others to light was my being accused of 'War Crimes'. Apparently who ever is behind whatever this is was not aware of my relationship with the mate of the Federation's President. Sarine finishes by saying, "Although incomplete, from what information we have, Starfleet Intelligence has concluded that the Klingons and Romulans or any splinter factions of are definitely not involved. I assume from the presence of and assistance from a Founder, we can add the Dominion and their allies to the list of the uninvolved." "You are correct Admiral. We had been informed of Commander D'Sefet's Section 31 activities but thanks to Lieutenant Commander Jacobs work, we now acknowledge the accusations are false. I have made inquires with all Dominion friends and they have assured me that they are not involved in any action against the Federation at this time", Odo informs. "And what of the Kzinti", Sarine asks. Although Security-Chief has come a long way in over coming the Kzinti's almost inbred attitude toward females, he has never encountered one of such high rank. Somewhat confused he seems not to hear Sarine's question until Jacobs prods him with, "Security-Chief?!" "Yes? Oh forgive me my Lor. . . Lady T'Sarine-Admiral. My father Shhis-Admiral has spoken personally to the Patriarch and has been assured no Kzinti has been permitted to do anything to challenge the Federation", Security-Chief answers. "Security-Chief", Jacobs begins with frustration sounding in her voice, "Sef wanted a discreet, unofficial inquiry" "As it was", Security-Chief answers, "Two old friends talking over food. We Kzinti are as the stone lion-man that sits in the desert of Earth the embodiment of discretion. We do not chatter idly away like the monkey-men." Jacobs starts to reply but is interrupted by Sarine, "What about your father coming for a visit in his Battleship Security-Chief?" "Shhis-Admiral will arrive tomorrow on the Bloody Fang and stay as long as needed lady T'Sarine-Admiral.", Security-Chief informs. "Good.", Sarine says and then summing things up, "Well, that takes care of the list of any that might have a motive and the resources to do something of this scope" "What about the 'Q'", Jacobs asks. "Not their style", Sarine answers, "Besides, if they wanted to do something they probably would have just simply replaced Sef and erased any memory of him being here. I take some comfort in the fact that it appears our enemy has limitations just like us." The briefing concludes with the decision that it should be made to appear that the plan of the unknown enemy is still working. Gerve will 'appear' to continue in command. Although because the plan was designed to get me out of the way, I will resume actual command and we will wait to see what is our enemy's next move.

While I was 'under arrest', I had a lot of time to consider what 'moves' our enemy could be planning. Gradually one seemed to become discernible and disturbed me as much as the soft rustle of tiny feet did as the rodents foraged for food at night in the pasture that was just outside the window of my room on my father's farm on Ferasa . I want to hold a private meeting to counter this move. Before the Shadow and Winter Hawk leave with our guests, I gather President Kirk, Admiral T'Sarine, Odo, Gerve and myself in my office. It took a lot of convincing but in the end I was able to address the worry I had.

After the Shadow and Winter Hawk leave, I personally make sure all records of the visit are erased and FI-9 gets back to some semblance of 'normal' while waiting on the next 'move'.

"Commander. . .", Gerve interrupts as Security-Chief and I are talking in his office, "I believe our adversaries have made their move." Both Security-Chief and I notice Gerve is sounding and acting strangely. He is moving slowly, stiffly. "I awoke this morning to find. . .", he says and as he speaks, the pink, hairless skin of his face begins to change, first to a golden brown and then to a syrupy mass. His voice also is changing from the rough tambour of a Tellarite to a more human sounding tone, "This!" All of a sudden, from the now liquid mass of his head, drops a large, strange, insect-like looking creature. It hits the floor with a thud and begins to crawl away. Security-Chief draws his Phaser but I order him not to fire. Quickly finding a box, the three of us, Security-Chief, not Gerve but now Odo, and I surround the creature and capture it. "WHAT IS THAT?!", Security-Chief asks, disgust sounding in his voice, "AND where is Gerve-Lieutenant Commander?!" As Odo reassumes the shape of Gerve, I explain, "I rrrealized that because Gerve had been ordered to rrreplace me that he probably would be target forrr whoeverrr wasss behind all thisss ssso I asked if Odo could transform himselfff into Gerve rrreplacement."

We carry the box containing the creature to Doctor Selar's office. There her examination reveals a surprising result. While trying to compare the creature to the Federation's Data Base, we are stopped by the warning that the results are filed under Top Secret, Authorized Personnel Only. Fortunately, I have the proper clearance and order the information displayed.

The information begins on or about Stardate 41775.5 and references several current and former high ranking Starfleet Officers including Admiral Norah Satie and Captain Jean-Luc Picard as well as the destruction of the U.S.S. Horatio NCC-10532.

"Do you have any more information Sef?", Sarine asks, anxiety coloring her voice when I contact her about the 'move'. "We are ssstill hunting.", I answer. "Finding who brought the creature to FI-9 should be your primary concern.", she says. "That what we thought but, with all comingsss and goingsss it difficult to sssort thingsss out.", I say. "I wonder why they targeted Gerve instead of you Sef?", Sarine says. "I might be able to answer that Admiral.", Doctor Selar begins, "It would appear the feline based brain of the Caitians is just enough different from the simian based brain of most humanoids to pose a problem for these creatures to control. That is apparently why they wanted Lieutenant Commander Gerve in charge. Like their porcine relatives, Tellarites are more human-like in their physiology. But why would the creatures want to gain control of FI-9? We are such an out of the way place." "If these are sssame creatures as onesss responsible for destruction of Horatio. Assuming Kzinti brain as difficult to control asss Caitian brain, it could be that these creaturesss are trying to use FI-9 to guard against any Kzinti interference with theirrr plansss.", I answer, "Looking overrr data, it would appear many rrraces of Alpha Quadrant including Vulcansss and by default Romulansss are sssusceptible to control." "Are you suggesting these creatures could start a war between the Federation, Romulan and Klingon Empires?", Sarine asks with some alarm. "If, asss it appeared in last encounterrr, theirrr goal isss to take overrr, what better way than to get humanoidsss to kill each otherrr off in masss.", I theorize, "there is old Caitian saying that goes, "Betterrr to let yourrr prey catch itself"." I note from the reactions that my theory strikes fear into all present. "Is there any more information on the creatures from the study of the one Captain Picard and Commander Riker destroyed", Doctor Selar asks? "Unfortunately there was little left of it or Mr. Remmick to study however we are searching for any information in Federation Databases and thanks to Sef, we will alert the Romulan and Klingon Empires to the threat and ask them to search for any information their databases might hold", Sarine answers. "If like most of galaxy, these creaturesss find it hard to get feline to do their bidding, you might want to assign the U.S.S. Sekmet and U.S.S. Menhet to most sssensitive duty.", I advise. Sarine begins to ask the reason for my recommendation, then looking at the readout she says, "Oh, I see what you mean Sef! Thank you for your input." I recommenced the Sekmet and Menhet because all of those ship's crews are Caitian.

Over the next few hours, Security-Chief, Doctor Selar, Sarrah, Jacobs, Odo, Gerve and myself fan out over the station, Tricorder in paw, scanning EVERYONE as discreetly as possible for the tell-tail "Gill" that sticks out of the back of the neck of the person infested by the "BUG". NOT an easy task! Made a little easier by the fact most Humans still regard the actions of Animal-Humans as, to say the least, strange. In the end we found that who ever had the mission of "Infecting" Gerve, thought it was successful and had departed FI-9 for parts unknown.

It was thought that there was no need to keep me informed as to the developments of the investigation. The thinking being the BUGs thought I was neutered, no, ah . . . neutralized! I began to think FI-9's involvement was over. Then . . .

It WAS a long day and I was more tired than usual. That was probably the reason I got a little careless. By the time I was aware there was a problem, the Trill's leopard spotted face was right in front of me! Before I could do anything his right arm stiffened and I felt the tingling that told me he had a Phaser! I never heard of a Phaser hit causing visions but as I begin to, as the Humans say, "Pass Out", out of where, I am not sure, I watch as the Trill's head detaches from his neck.

The whirr of a Tricorder's Scanner escorts me out of my dreamless sleep. For a second I am confused then I remember the Trill and prepare to defend myself! "Easy Commander!", a female voice begins, an unseen arm moving to hold me down, "You're ok." I open my eyes and confirm the owner of the voice is my CMO, Doctor Selar. I look around the room, in addition to Selar, Jacobs and Security-Chief are bending over a body lying on the deck in one corner of the room and standing behind Selar, her usually attractive mouth twisted into a fang barring snarl, her long, sharp claws, dripping with blood, displayed and her umbrella shaped ears flat against her skull stands Sarrah! Her eyes burning in a way I have never seen before and one I hope NOT to see again any time soon! Every move Selar makes in examining me is accompanied by a hiss and growl from Sarrah. "What happened?", I ask, expecting Jacobs or Security-Chief to answer. Instead it is Sarrah! "I see that kshat (A herbivore capable of digesting offal: An insulting term for one behaving as a kshat) sneak into My Lord D'Sefet's rooms, I follow but before I can stop him, he shoots you! I stop him!", Sarrah hisses out. "Stop him!", Jacobs comments, "You ripped his frigging head off eh!" "He attack Sef! I should have shredded him into a million bloody pieces and devoured each one!", Sarrah growls with such ferocity that even Security-Chief display, with his ears and tail, shock at his sister's rage. More concerned about who the Trill was and what he had in mind and knowing there are NO Trills assigned to the station. I ask, "Who isss he and where did he come from?" "His ID says he is a crewman on that Terran freighter that arrived this morning.", Security-Chief answers. "AND he was carrying this!", Jacobs adds, lifting up a clear plastic box with a BUG in it. Seeing the BUG, I jump up and begin giving orders! "Security-Chief, Jacobsss, get to Bastet! Powerrr up herrr weaponsss and target that freighterrr! If ssshe does ANYTHING but float there, Blast herrr into million bloody piecesss!", I say, borrowing Sarrah's phrase. "But what about Gerve-Lieutenant Commander?", Security-Chief asks. I have already thought of Gerve and considering who was the BUG's first target I order, "Selar, get to Gerve, check him overrr! Sarrah go with Selar and protect herrr!" "NO SEF! I protect you!", Sarrah protests. "Do you think Lieutenant Commander Gerve was a target this time also Commander?", Selar questions picking up on my line of thinking. "Do NOT know but if he wasss he needsss to be contained!", I answer, then to Sarrah, "Thank you forrr protecting me Sarrah but now I need you help Doctorrr Selarrr. I can protect myself now.", getting my old Phaser from the desk drawer I add, "If Gerve clean, sssend him to Ops, I will joining him as sssoon asss I get dressed!" Everyone scatters leaving me with the body of the Trill. Before Jacobs leaves I ask, "Where otherrr BUG?" "Other BUG?", she questions. "Yes, one controlling him.", I say motioning to the Trill's body. "All we found was this one in this box!", she answers as she runs out the door.

I arrive in Ops a few seconds after Doctor Selar, Sarrah and Gerve. As I enter, I glance at Gerve and then Selar, picking up on my silent question, Selar says, "He scans clean Commander." Before anything else happens, the Freighter Captain is calling, "This is the SS Valencia calling FI9! Our sensors indicate you are targeting us with weapons! What IS wrong? We have passengers on board for god sake!" "What isss statusss of yourrr ssship?", I question. "It's Middle Watch the worried looking Captain responds. "Ssso most of crew and passengers are in cabinsss?", I question. "Yes, what's going on! I have a right . . .", the Captain protests. I cut him off by growling an order, "Secure ALL doorsss in ship! Lock everyone in quartersss NOW! And turn around!" He looks at me for a minute as if trying to decide if I am crazy or not but I curl my upper lip slightly to display my Long, Sharp, White Fangs and the captain quickly complies. There is no "BUG GILL" protruding from the back of the captain's neck so I continue giving orders, "Security-Chief, get sssquad together, board and sssearch freighterrr! Be careful we have not cleared everyone here." "I understand D'Sefet-Commander, I was thinking of asking some of my Kzinti Brothers from the Bloody Fang to assist me this time, would that be acceptable?" Looking at the shocked look on the captain's furless face I answer, "I think that would be very wissse idea and I do not think therrre will be any protestsss!"

"Security-Chief and hisss Kzinti searched vessel and found nothing unusual orrr of interest outside of Trill'sss Quartersss. Admiral.", I report as my staff and I brief President Kirk and Admiral T'Sarine. "I am sending all his logs and private communications to you for analysis, Lady T'Sarine-Admiral", Security-Chief adds. "Good, lets hope there are some clues in there. You say the Trill was NOT under BUG control doctor? Was he joined?", Sarine comments. "He was not joined and there was no evidence of a BUG.", Doctor Selar reports, "And Sarrah decapitated the Trill quite cleanly. There was little damage to the head." "That is MOST disturbing!", President Kirk says, "Someone willing helping these aliens invade us!" "The Valencia'sss captain wasss VERY unhappy with limited explanation I gave him forrr actions against hisss ship and death of hisss crew memberrr.", I explain to Sarine, "I tried to rrreveal asss little asss possible." "I will handle it Sef.", President Kirk responds, "Don't worry about him!" After a few more questions, the meeting is concluded and everyone leaves my office. EVERYONE except Sarrah.

She stands in the exact spot she has been standing in ever since I entered my office hours ago. Her claws still out, colored red with dried blood. Her eyes still glowing with the burning light I saw in my quarters. I have not had time to question her as to how or why she was following the Trill but CAT, I am happy she was! I go to her, wrap my arms around her and draw her body to mine. I take her paws in mine and rub them until her claws retract. Her muscles are so tense she is shaking. I massage the nape of her neck with my paw, trying to get her to relax! FINALLY she does . . . a little. "Relax my little Kzintosh.", I softly purr, rubbing my chin across her cheek, "It all over now!" "OH SEF!", is all she manages to say before burying her nose in the fur of my neck. She begins to breath heavy and softly mew, actions that are the equivalent to humans crying. Like most males in the universe, I do not know what to do with a crying female! All I can do is hold her, tight and let her know I am there for her.

All of us sit in the darkened Situation Room on the U.S.S./R.S.E. Shadow Hawk's Battle Bay, around a table piled high with padds, Admiral T'Sarine, her mate, President Kirk, Odo, Gerve, Security-Chief, Jacobs and I. There are MANY problems. We found and captured the "Mother", it was inside a Ferangi working as Independent Asteroid Locator. He had apparently thought he had made a deal with the "Mother", thinking "She" would work WITH him for profit instead of enslaving him. When he gave up seeking profit, his business associates knowing something was wrong discovered his mistake! Being a Ferangi, even with the added strength the "Mother" imparted, he was easily subdued and imprisoned, the "Mother's" mistake. Using the Transporter, the Ferangi and the "Mother" were separated, both survived! Although from the reaction of the Grand Nagus, I think the Ferangi might have preferred death! A Vulcan Master was called to preform a mind meld and that session cleared up once and for all whether these creatures wanted peace! THEY DO NOT! The "Mother" was destroyed, neutralizing any of her bugs inhabiting citizens of the Federation, Klingon or Romulan Empires. From the reports there were more than a few in important places. Now we are met to make a plan of action to rid the Galaxy of this problem once and for all!

Odo is impatient but we are awaiting the arrival of an expert. The doors to the room swish open and in steps, "DAX?", Odo observes with a bit of shock. "Captain Ezri Dax reporting as ordered Mam.", Dax, coming to attention and addressing Admiral T'Sarine says. Then turning to Odo, "Hi Odo! It is good to see you again." "Ezri . . . What are you doing here?", Odo asks. It turns out Trills know MUCH about the Bugs and it is thought a joined Trill was immune to possession because of the symbiont.

"One of our biggest problems is the danger of our troops on the ground being infected and turning on each other.", Captain Dax says. "And fighting in Armor is NOT very efficient.", Admiral T'Sarine adds. "I thought of that.", I comment, adding with a slight twitch of my whiskers, "That isss why I contacted friend for little help." "What DID you DO Sef?", my ex-Commanding Officer T'Sarine asks nervously in a tone I have heard Humans use when scolding their cat companion for regurgitating a hair ball. Before I can answer the Bridge is calling, "We are picking up a localized disturbance of Triquantum Waves with Subspace disruptions!" "Lets see it!", President Kirk orders. As we watch, space opens up and a Borg Cube emerges from a Transwarp Conduit. "Red Alert! Shields Up! Arm Weapons!", Sarine screams. "That not very friendly Admiral!", I scold, "To gggreet ally in sssuch mannerrr and after they have come sssuch long way tooo! D'Sefet to Borg Cube." Everyone is looking at me with open mouths! The silence is SO loud it is deafening! "Hugh of Borg here Sef, Pursistance IS Fertile! How's everything going?", is the reply in a soft, gentle voice heard by everyone. Odo, a bit more emotion sounding in his voice than usual asks, "The Federation has an alliance with the Borg?!" "Uh . . . ", President Kirk begins. "WE . . . ", Admiral T'Sarine adds. Wanting to give the Founders something to think about, I explain, "We have rrreached understanding Odo." Then, "Greetings Hugh of Borg! Thank you forrr answering my call forrr assistance.", I continue, "Are you rrready to beam overrr?" "WHAT?!", Sarine says, "Beam over!" "Yesss, Borg need to be included in briefing!", I say. "I have what I think you want Sef. If you are ready for us, we are ready.", Hugh answers. "We are asss rrready asss we will ever be Hugh.", I say looking at the panicked, shocked , furless faces around me. A moment later we are joined in the Situation Room by two Borg Drones.

Hugh is diminutive in stature and delicate in features. A scanner still replaces his left eye but some of the other Borg hardware is gone and his skin has a bit more natural, for a Human that is, color in it. His companion is large and powerful even without the Borg uniform and related hardware. Oh yes AND she IS a Klingon! "You are looking well Sef.", Hugh comments with a smile for his old friend. "And you look like you are getting bit of sssun asss Humans sssay.", I answer. "COMMANDER D'SEFET!", Sarine interrupts a mixture of anger, puzzlement and fright sounding in her voice and showing on her face, "EXPLAIN YOURSELF!" "It sssimple, Admiral. It wasss yourrr plan to invade Bug'sss Planet and try and rrrescue theirrr victimsss correct?", I begin, "And one of main problemsss is as Captain Dax sssaid, bugsss infesting troopsss. And sssome way had to be found to prevent thisss Correct?" "Yes! But why BORG?!" Captain Dax questions. "Asss far asss we can tell Bugsss infest host through mouth and control host by exerting influence on host'sss Brain Stem Correct?", I respond, "So, way isss needed to prevent thisss contact." "That IS why we were discussing some sort of armor Sef!", Sarine says, "But WHY Borg?" "BECAUSE . . . The BORG's armor . . . Is INTERNAL EH! . . . DAMN IT SEF!", Jacobs interjects as she begins to scan the Klingon Drone. "Explain, Engineer!", President Kirk orders. Finishing her scan of the Klingon Drone, Jacobs explains, "This Borg's brain and spine are incased in metal! Nothing bigger than a blood cell can get any where near them! The BUGS would have to be carrying can openers to infest them!". " BUT we still have the problem of stopping the infected fighting our troops with out killing them!", Sarine adds, "From the other encounters, you almost have to set a Phaser to kill to stop someone that is infested!" "Not problem for Borg Nanitesss!", I answer. "NANITES! Sef! We want to rescue these people NOT turn them into Borg!", Jacobs says, looking at Hugh, adding, "No Offence eh!" "Nanites do NOT turn one into a fully functional Drone.", Hugh explains, "They are used to make the recipient more corporative to assimilation. For example my recommendation would be to instruct the infected through the Nanites to go to sleep until they can be gathered up and purged." "And rrremoving Nanitesss isss not problem anymorrre.", I add.

"I was not sure how many units you needed Sef, so I brought only ten thousand", Hugh says. "ONLY ten thou . . .", Captain Dax echos. "I can have twice that number here in a matter of hours if needed.", Hugh claims.

"I'm not excited about leading a bunch of mindless drones that have been ordered into battle!", Captain Dax complains. "We are NOT mindless Trill and still having and remembering friends and family in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, ALL of us are volunteers!", the Klingon Drone answers, breaking her silence.

"Uh Sef can we talk to you?", Jacobs asks poking her head into my office. "Of course Jacobsss, come in.", I invite. She enters followed by Security-Chief. Jacobs sits down but Security-Chief does not, not until I invite him to. "Has Selar talked to you about Sarrah, Sef?", Jacobs begins. Wondering what she is referring to I answer, "No but thingsss HAVE just gotten back to normal. What wrong?" "Jacobs-Lieutenant Commander is referring to Sarrah's actions when that Trill attacked you D'Sefet-Commander.", Security-Chief explains. "Sef! She tore his head off with her bare claws!", Jacobs says, a little disgust sounding in her voice. "To be fair Jacobs-Lieutenant Commander, she just had witnessed the Trill shoot D'Sefet-Commander! She WAS defending him from that attack.", Security-Chief counters sounding a bit proud of his sister I think. "Maybe so but that doesn't explain her actions against us!", she argues. I sit quietly while Jacobs and Security-Chief make an unofficial report on that nights happenings. After she dispatched the Trill, Sarrah had put out a medical emergency and a security breach call. Doctor Selar arrived but Sarrah would not let her anywhere near me. Jacobs arrived next and even though she is a close friend, when she tried to get Sarrah to let Selar examine me, Sarrah attacked Jacobs and to hear Jacobs tell it, If Security-Chief had not arrived and restrained his sister, might have killed her too. "I understand what had happened and where she was coming from Sef, BUT!", Jacobs says, "You saw the look in her eyes! That look was PURE ANIMAL BLOOD LUST!" "There are ancient legends, whispered, about a time when the Kzinrret were more like Kzintosh.", Security-Chief begins, "It is said a female would defend her mate to the death! Or avenge him if she was given the chance!" "All I'm saying is Sarrah could use a little help dealing with her feelings about that night Sef!", Jacobs says, "I have tried to talk to her but she gets nervous and a bit defensive when I bring up the subject." "Hasss yourrr relationship with Sarrah been injured Jacobsss?", I question. "ARE YOU KIDDING eh!", Jacobs answers, "I LOVE HER! She IS STILL the sister AND the kitten I never had! I know she loves me! That's what makes this all so frustrating, how you damn CATS hide your pain, bearing it alone!" FI-9 and the Bastet does NOT have a Councilor, I did not think we needed one but Jacobs is correct. Sarrah has been acting strangely around me also, so I promise, "I will sssee what help isss available. Thank you forrr yourrr concern forrr Sarrah. Especially your'sss Security-Chief!" "Sarrah might be a Kzinrret, D'Sefet-Commander but she IS my sister, my blood runs through her heart and her blood through mine!", Security-Chief declares proudly, prompting a shocked look from Jacobs.

After they leave I receive a message I have been dreading for a LONG time.

Star Trek: Federation Installation Nine, Episode 19 Here Kitty

Here Kitty Kitty!

"I could have sworn that meteorite I saw last night came down somewhere around here!", the Old Man says to himself as he searches the thick forest around him. Checking with the few land marks again he silently curses, and says, with a groan, "No, a few more miles to the east it looks like."

He is all alone on this world, as far as he knows and had been for . . . What DID Mother call them? Oh yes, YEARS! As he hikes through the thick under growth, he tries to remember pieces of those years. His first memories were of a happy, warm, bright, inside place where he, his Mother, Kitty and a man his Mother had told him was his Father lived. He remembered it as a magical place, having a hard time sorting his impressions from memories. There was no hunger, thirst, hot or cold there. Anything you wanted you could have without having to work, hunt or make it! AND Mother had told him this wonderful place was sailing from star to star! Then came the bad time! Flashes of bright light and loud booms like thunder that shook everything is what he remembers most. He also remembers something falling on him, pain and then blackness. His next memory was of him and his Mother. They were in a dark, cramped room with some other people. Everyone was scared and many like his Mother were crying. His arm hurt and he wanted his Kitty! Mother gave him something she said would make everything better. His next clear memory was of the forest. His Mother and four other old people were there too. His Mother told him that this would be their new home, he thought how sad she looked as she said those words.

The Old Man is so caught up in remembering that he almost falls into the beginnings of a ditch gouged out of the forest's floor. There are broken trees everywhere and the ditch stretches out in front of him for a mile or more. At the other end he can just make out an object but it does NOT look like a meteorite!

He makes his way carefully along the edge of the ditch. Trying not to stumble on the soft earth the object had dug up. As he gets nearer the object he begins to realize things. First the object is NO meteor! It is mostly smooth and mostly shinny white. It kind of looks like it is made from the same material the building he and his mother lived in when they came to the forest was made from and it is not much bigger. As he finally gets along side of the thing, he sees there are markings on it, WORDS his Mother had called them. Trying to remember a skill he has not used in years, the Old Man reads, out loud, "Un Ited Feder Ation of Plan Its." Studying the thing more closely he thinks it looks something like a Sky Creature. It has short, stubby wings attached to a large body and the body has both a pointy and flat end. The right side of the Thing has been torn open, starting about midway between the two ends but no guts are leaking out. As he looks into the hole, his eyes grow wide and he yells, "KITTY!" The Thing was eating a Black Kitty when it fell from the sky! He hurries to where the Kitty lies entangled in the Thing's body, hoping it isn't already dead!

The Old Man tries to pull the Kitty out of the Thing but finds it has wrapped tendrils around the Kitty's body. Pulling out his knife, the Old Man cuts the Kitty free, pulls it out and gently lays it on the ground as he does, he feels the Kitty's sides moving in and out indicating it is alive.

It is growing dark and it is a long walk back to the Camp. The Kitty is in no condition to follow him there so the Old Man knows he will have to carry it. Before leaving the Thing, he takes another look inside to see if there are any more Kittys being eaten. He sees none but he does see a pack with a mark he recognizes. It is a mark just like the one on the arrow shaped badge his Mother always wore.

The Kitty is bigger and the Old Man is older than the Before Kitty so it takes quite a while to get it back to the Camp but with a few rest stops he does just as the sun disappears from the sky. He takes the Kitty into the house, puts it onto his bed and begins to examine it. Someone has dressed it, in both a shirt and pair of pants. Leading the Old Man to wonder if it was someone's pet although it has no collar. There is blood oozing from a cut on the right side of Kitty's head. the Old Man needs remove the kitty's clothes to check to see how badly it is hurt but not wanting to destroy them he tries to gently removes them. As he raises the Kitty's front legs up to remove the shirt he feels a broken bone in it's right front leg. As he continues his examination, he finds three broken ribs on right side. The Kitty is having trouble breathing and the Old Man fears they might have punctured the Kitty's lung. He slides off the Kitty's pants to check its lower body for injury and in doing so discovers the Kitty is a male this time. Looking at Kitty's left ear, the Old Man sees it is un-clipped indicating Kitty has not been neutered. There are no visible new injures but considering severity of the others, the Old Man wonders if it wouldn't be more humane to put him "to sleep". He decides to try and help the Kitty first, putting him "to sleep" could always be a backup plan. He does his best to treat the Kitty, remembering all the things his Mother taught him about what she called First Aid. He splints the Kitty's leg and wraps a bandage around his ribs to keep them from moving. Finally he carefully cleans and bandages the cut on Kitty's head. With the Kitty sleeping, the Old Man gets himself some food and makes the Camp ready for the night. Kitty is still sleeping as he gets ready for sleep. Just before he lays down on the deck to sleep, the Old Man rubs the Kitty's soft belly fur and smiles.

"Where IS D'Sefet-Commander?", Security-Chief asks Jacobs as she steps off the Transporter Pad in FI-9's Control Center. Having literally arrived just moments ago on the Bastet she responds, "WHAT are you HOWLING about Security-Chief?" "D'Sefet-Commander! Where IS he?", Security-Chief reasks. "He hasn't arrived yet?", Jacobs questions, "He left Star Base 95 almost twelve hours BEFORE we did!" "NO he has NOT arrived AND there has been NO communications from him either!", Security-Chief answers, "What was this madness anyway? Why did he decide to fly a Federation Fighter back here instead of returning on the Bastet?" "Sef IS a pilot and to keep his wings he has to demonstrate his flying skills periodically.", Jacobs explains, "Have you contacted Star Base 95?" "YES! Of Course! Jacobs-Lieutenant Commander. I informed them of the problem and asked them to search their Star System and surrounding space for signs of him. I am waiting to hear back form them now!", Security-Chief answers sounding more than a bit incensed. "I'll get the Bastet ready to go look for Sef along the route his flight plan indicated. What a time for Gerve to be off station on leave!", Jacobs says, then remembering another rescue mission, "Unless you want to take command of the Bastet." Security-Chief ALSO remembers and with his fur flattening indicating worry he answers, "No I will take charge of the station.", then adds, "Take Sarrah with you, she might be of some help."

Jacobs doesn't understand Security-Chief's suggestion but goes to find Sarrah. Instead Sarrah finds her. The second Jacobs steps off the Lift on the Bazar Level, Sarrah, with a Medical Pack slung over her shoulder, runs up to her, grabs her arm, pulls her toward the Transporters and says, "My Lord D'Sefet-Commander IS hurt! WE GO MeeAHH' (Now or Quickly)." Although she doesn't understand what Sarrah is talking about, Jacobs lets Sarrah have her way and soon both females are on their way to the Bastet.

The Kitty is still sleeping when the Old Man wakes up the next morning. After making sure he is still alive, the Old Man gets himself something to eat. As he eats he wonders if this Kitty can catch Mickies like Mama Tiger or if he will have to catch them for him. He also remembers how lonely and quiet it was after his Mother died and how happy he was when he found Mama Tiger. He remembers the long, cold , lonely nights made better cuddling in her long, soft, warm fur and even though she did not speak, much, the sound of her roars, growls and hisses was music to his ears. It had been SO Lonely and Quiet since he had been forced to put her to Sleep after that fight with the Howller. She had saved his life but he could not save her! The Old Man hoped it would be different with the Black Kitty. Hearing a noise, the Old Man looks to see Kitty moving. Concerned he will hurt himself, the Old Man hurries to the bed. "Easy Kitty.", he softly says, comforting him by petting him between the ears. "Be still! Everything is ok." For a moment their eyes meet and the Old Man can feel the pain in the Kitty's large, deep orange/Golden colored "cat" eyes. Then Kitty gives out a little noise that sounds like a Human asking for help then closes his eyes and goes back to sleep. The Old Man hates to leave the Kitty alone but there ARE chores to do so hoping he does not wake back up until he gets back, the Old Man heads off to work.

Jacobs sits in the Captain's Chair on board the Bastet impatiently waiting for Security-Chief to hear from Star Base 95. The only one MORE impatient IS Sarrah! She is pacing the Bridge like a caged Tiger! Every once and a while she will stop, let out a growl or a hiss then resume pacing. Finally Security-Chief calls and informs them that Searchers from Star Base 95 report no sign of D'Sefet-Commander in their sector. While she waited Jacobs reviewed Sef's planned route and considered the most likely place to begin her search. After she hears Security-Chief's report, she orders the helm to set course for that area at Warp 6. As they depart, Sarrah takes the Doctor's Position on the Bridge, standing just behind the Captain's Chair.

The Old Man hurries through his chores and returns to Camp as fast as he can. When he arrives he looks toward the house and sees that the Kitty is gone! Panic sets in as he remembers how Kittys like to go off and hide when they think they are dying! "Here KITTY, KITTY!", he calls as he begins searching the Camp, hoping he is not to late! A rustling sound reaches his ears, he follows it and finds Kitty trying to get to the Water Container. "Here Kitty, let me help you!", the Old Man calls out as he hurries to the Kitty's side. Filling a cup with water, he gently gathers Kitty in his arms and lifts the cup to the Kitty's mouth. Kitty drinks long, stops to breathe and then drinks more, almost emptying the cup. "Enough?", the Old Man asks, he thinks he sees the Kitty nod. "Then lets get you back to bed!", he continues as he carefully picks Kitty up. Gently laying Kitty back down on the bed and petting him between the ears, the Old Man scolds, "If you want something ask me! You will hurt yourself more if you move around!" He does NOT expect an answer, he knows Kittys can't talk but when the Kitty replies, "Thank you I will.", the Old Man almost faints! The Old Man stares at the Black Furred Kitty with an open mouth. Did he just hear what he thinks he had? Kittys CAN'T talk, CAN THEY! Mama Tiger never really talked, although she would sometimes growl or hiss in a certain way or rub his face with hers in response to him speaking. Is he becoming "SILLY" like his mother did just before she died? Talking to people that were not there and doing other strange things! He ALWAYS feared he would become like her! Bending down, over the Kitty, the Old Man gently puts his hands on either side of Kitty's head, being careful about his head wound. He looks into the Kitty's golden eyes and sees the intelligence there BUT to talk! Ever since his Mother died the Old Man has missed the sound of someone else's voice! He has dreamed about someone to talk with! HE even imagined never hearing another voice must be what Hell would be like. A thousand questions flood his mind but one goes to the front of the line as he remembers the clothes the Kitty was wearing and the question of an owner so the Old Man slowly, carefully asks, "Do you have a name Kitty?" He watches as the Kitty opens his mouth and says, "I am Commanderrr D'Sefet." The Old Man's body begins to shake, his eyes filling with tears. He puts his head on the Kitty's . . . Commander D'Sefet's soft, warm belly fur and begins to sob. He feels Commander D'Sefet's paw begin to stroke his head in a comforting, petting-like manner.

Reaching the area Jacobs chose to begin the search, she orders scanning to begin. Sarrah has been in Sick Bay making sure it was ready. Jacobs hears the doors swish open and sees Sarrah walk up close to the View Screen. She stares past it, deep into space for a few moments and then spins around and says, "My Lord D'Sefet-Commander IS NOT here! WE GO!" Jacobs can't believe her ears! "Sarrah! We just arrived! Give the scans a chance eh!" Sarrah rushes to Jacobs, grabs her by the shoulders and pleads, "He is NOT here! He is HURT! WE NEED TO FIND HIM!" Seeing the shocked and questioning looks from the Bridge Crew, Jacobs takes Sarrah's hand and leads her into the Turbo Lift. After the doors close she begins, "Sarrah! I know you are not familiar with Starfleet or its protocols BUT you are NOT a Starfleet Officer! YOU CAN'T give orders to the crew!", adding, jokingly, "Besides, as the Captain, it makes me look bad eh!" "Sef is NOT HERE!", Sarrah pleads, "HE is HURT! I NEED TO FIND HIM!" "I'm worried about him too but how DO you know Sef isn't here?", Jacobs questions. "I . . . I feel him!", is the cryptic answer Sarrah gives, "I KNOW THINGS Cleopatra!" Jacobs, shocked at Sarrah using her first name looks deep into her friend's Cat's eyes. She loves and trusts her Kzinti Sister and knows she loves Sef even more than she does. She steps toward the Turbo Lift's doors, they open and Jacobs orders, "Make ready to get underway, Helm plot a course for the next search area!" Sarrah looking a little relaxed, rubs her chin across Jacobs right shoulder in a "Thank You" gesture.

The Old Man opens his eyes, he is cuddling with Kitty, or is it Commander D'Sefet?! His head is still resting on his soft, warm belly fur. Was he dreaming? IS he going Silly? DID the Kitty REALLY speak? He lifts his head from the Kitty's belly and sees him regarding him with those beautiful, intelligent, deep orange/Golden colored cat's eyes. "Commander D'Sefet?", he asks, praying for an answer. "You can call me Sef.", the Kitty answers, "And you are?" The Old Man is giddy, FINALLY someone to talk with and he asks questions! Questions? He asked who am I! The Old Man searches his memory in panic. Finally he remembers his Mother's voice calling to him. "My name is . . . Bobby.", he answers, also remembering he asks, "Are you hungry Kit . . . Sef?" "Yesss! Asss matterrr of fact I am!", Sef answers. Bobby goes and gets what he has gathered for tonight's meal. Seeing what there is and remembering what Mama Tiger like to eat, he apologizes, "I'm sorry Sef, I didn't want to get to far from Camp today so I wasn't able to catch any Swimmers or Mickeys for meat. About all I have are plant parts." "That fine Bobby, I like plant parts to!", Sef answers, "Also where isss my uniform? There ISss draft in here!" Uniform, Bobby repeats to himself then, THAT WAS what Mother called the clothes SHE WORE! "They're right over there Sef.", he answers pointing to indicate their location. Sef makes a move to get up, seeing it, Bobby says,"Lay still Sef, I'll get them for you!" "No, thank you Bobby.", Sef answers, "I need to move around a little!" By now Sef has inventoried his injuries and made note of Bobby's attempt to treat them, even so, the pain of his broken ribs catches him by surprise as he rises. Sef retrieves his clothes and sits back down on the bed to put on the pants and says, "I might need little help with ssshirt in few momentsss." Putting the plant parts on to boil, Bobby goes and helps Sef finish dressing. It is ONLY then he notices the arrow shaped badge attached to Sef's shirt. It looks a lot like his Mother's badge! Bobby wonders if it is just a coincidence or not!

All through the meal Bobby aches to begin asking Sef the thousands of questions in his mind but his Mother has always said not to talk while eating so Sef and he eat in silence. However he is happy to see Sef is actually enjoying the plants.

After the meal, as Bobby is cleaning up it is Sef that has questions, "Isss my ssship very farrr from here Bobby?" "Ship? What is that Sef?", Bobby asks. "The vessel you must have found me in orrr nearrr.", Sef answers. "I found you inside a Thing that looked like a Sky Creature Sef. It had eaten you before it fell and split open! I had to cut you out of it!", Bobby explains. "No Bobby, that was my ssship! I was on way from Star Base 95 tooo . . .", is all Sef can get out before Bobby races to him and asks, "Star Base! You mean that Thing could sail from star to star?!" "Yesss.", Sef answers. They continue talking, Bobby tells Sef the Thing is about an hour's walk away. Although he knows he is in no condition to walk that far, he gets Bobby to promise to take him there in the morning. Sef hopes there is enough power left in the fighter to send a SOS. He also hopes he can retrieve his Phaser and Tricorder. Before they turn in for the night Bobby shows Sef the only item his mother was able to take from their . . . SHIP? She said it was a Hologram of His Father, Her and Him when he was little. Sef looks at it and is surprised to see two Starfleet officers proudly holding their new born baby. The date on the Hologram tells Sef Bobby's age. The Star Date indicates Bobby is over ninety years old!

Ship's Log, U.S.S. Bastet, Lieutenant Commander Jacobs commanding. With Sarrah's help we have searched almost all of the areas I had intended to search in record time. Only one problem, NO SIGN OF SEF! After Sarrah "Scans" these last areas, I don't know what to do, I'm out of ideas.

As she had done before, soon after the Bastet enters the area, Sarrah goes to the View Screen and stares at it and as before, she turn to Jacobs and proclaims, "He is NOT HERE!" But this time something is different. Sarrah turns back toward the screen, again staring intently at it for a long time. Then she slowly, cautiously raises her arm and extends a clawed finger toward the screen. "THERE! My Lord D'Sefet-Commander is THERE!" The entire Bridge Crew joins Jacobs in straining to see where Sarrah is pointing. "Where Sarrah?", Jacobs questions. Sarrah steps closer to the screen and stretches to point to a star in the extreme upper right edge, "There! My Lord D'Sefet-Commander is on one of the worlds that dance around this star! AND, HE IS ALIVE!" "Get a fix on that star Helmsman!", Jacobs orders. "Got it Commander but . . . ", the Helmsman begins. "BUT What?", Jacobs asks fearing the worst. "But the star IS at least Sixty Light Years off of the Commander's planned course.", the Crewman reports. "Display the information we have on it!", Jacobs commands still slightly skeptical of Sarrah's "Knowing Things". The charts has little information on the star or it's system. A long range probe was sent in over a hundred years ago and found a medium sized, yellow star with two Class M planet in orbit around it. Neither planet was reported to have sentient life forms. Trusting Sarrah and having little else to go on Jacobs orders, "Helm, plot a course and go!"

As Bobby fixes breakfast early the next morning, he question Sef about EVERYTHING he has ever wondered about and Sef tries to answer in a way Bobby can understand. Sef realizes Bobby was just a weanling, what Humans call a toddler when he came to this planet. From his stories, Sef pieces together what must have happened. When they get back to FI-9 he can use the names on the Hologram to fill in the blanks. Bobby also tells Sef about Mama Tiger, his "Before" Kitty and what happened to her. Reading between the lines Sef realizes she WAS a Kzinrret! He wonders how she might have gotten here. After breakfast, with Bobby leading the way, they head for Sef's ship.

It is a LONG walk for Sef with his injuries but eventually they do reach the crash site. Sef, left hand on hip, right cradled in a sling, stands near the place where Bobby almost fell into the ditch the fighter dug as it crashed and remembers the old adage, "Any landing you can walk away from IS a GOOD landing". Continuing on to the wreck, Sef realizes how lucky he was to EVEN be carried away from here ALIVE! Sef finds his Phaser and Tricorder in the wrecked cockpit and uses it to scan the Fighter. Its readings have bad news. There is no power to transmit a distress signal and the Emergency Ident Transmitter is NOT operating either. Looking at the mess Sef doubts even Jacobs could do anything with it. Bobby joins Sef beside the Fighter and asks, "This Thing flew from star to star?" "That correct Bobby.", Sef answers. "Can you fix it Sef?", Bobby wonders. "No, thisss ssship hasss visited herr last ssstar.", Sef pronounces. "To bad.", Bobby says sadly, "I would have liked to have visited a star." "You will get that chance.", Sef says, then seeing the questioning look on Bobby's face explains, "My Crew will be looking forrr me, they will find me!"

Sef knows there is little he can do here, he has his equipment so he suggests they return to Camp. Bobby nods and takes the lead. Sef begins to follow when . . . "Bastet to Commander D'Sefet, do you read us?" Bobby, responding to the strange voice spins around in time to see Sef tap the badge on his shirt and say, "D'Sefet here. It good to hearrr from you." Bobby hears a different voice say, "We are about a minute from entering orbit. Sarrah and I will beam down when we are in range." "We are looking forward to yourrr visit, D'Sefet out.", Sef responds.

A few moments later Bobby hears a strange noise, turns in its direction and looks to see two columns of blue light appearing a few feet away. Then he sees the forms of two creatures begin to appear in the light. The blue light dims and disappears and in its place stand two women! One is wearing a Uniform like Sef's and the other, Bobby blinks and rubs his eyes. The other looks like Mama Tiger!

The one dressed like Sef calls out, "Commander!" and Mama Tiger yells, "My Lord" as they rush up to where Sef is standing.

Jacobs throws her arms around Sef and begins to hug him. Feeling Sef wince she realizes her mistake, releases her hold on him and says, "Sorry eh!" At the same time Sarrah is scanning Sef with her Tricorder and warns Jacobs, "Careful Jacobs-Lieutenant Commander! My Lord D'Sefet-Commander has three broken ribs and a bruised lung as well as a broken arm!" "I thought you once told me Cats ALWAYS land on their feet Commander!", Jacobs jokes as she turns her attention to the wreck of the Fighter. "I AM on my feet Jacobsss! I landed just little hard isss all!", Sef jokingly replies adding, "You need examine Fighterrr it lost powerrr in flight!" Jacobs nods and adds, "And you were Sixty Light Years off course too! I'll get on it right away!" Sixty Light Years! Sef repeats in his mind. His navigation skills might be a little rusty but NOT THAT RUSTY! Not a particularly religious Caitian, Sef DOES wonder if the Masters had guided him to this forgotten planet and it's sole prisoner, Bobby. BOBBY! In all the happiness of seeing Sarrah and Jacobs, Sef had forgotten him!

Sef looks to see Bobby standing a few feet away, a visage of confusion on his face. "Bobby!", Sef calls, "Come here! I want to introduce you to my crew!" Bobby hurries to the group and Sef begins, "Bobby thisss isss Lieutenant Commander Jacobsss my Chief Engineerrr and thisss isss . . ." "Mama TIGER!", Bobby yells putting his arms around Sarrah. Sarrah stiffens in Bobby's grasp but remains calm. As Sef carefully loosens Bobby's grip, he says, "No Bobby. Thisss isss Sarrah. She probally looks like yourrr Mama Tigerrr because, way you describe herrr, I think ssshe wasss Kzinrret to." "I'm sorry Sarrah.", Bobby says, a downcast look on his face, "I know Mama Tiger is dead, I had to put her to sleep! Its just that I miss her so much!" "I understand Bobby.", Sarrah says gently and then does something that surprises both Jacobs and Sef. She reaches her arms out and pulls Bobby to her in a soft embrace. After a moment Sarrah releases Bobby and says, "I need to get you to the Bastet My Lord so I can treat your injuries." "AND I need to find out why this piece of junk ended up here!", Jacobs adds as she contacts the Bastet and orders her Engineering Team to beam down.

Jacobs begins her inspection of the Fighter and Sarrah takes Sef's hand and leads him clear of the wreckage. "Come here Bobby!", Sef invites, "I want to ssshow you MY otherrr ssship!" "MY SHIP!', Jacobs corrects. Bobby sprints to where Sef and Sarrah are standing. Sarrah taps the badge on her chest and says, "Sarrah to Bastet, three to beam directly to Sick Bay." Bobby feels something strange happening, the forest is becoming fuzzy and there is that strange noise again, closer this time. The forest disappears and in its place Bobby finds himself standing in a large, bright room with a lot of beds in it. Bobby sees Sarrah lead Sef to one of the beds, Sef lies down and a flat thing above the bed lights up. Bobby is to frightened to move until Sef calls, "Come here Bobby! Welcome to Bastet!" Bobby watches as Sarrah waves little shiny, box things over Sef, the most interesting was the one she used to make the cut on Sef's head disappear. After Sarrah is through with Sef, she asks Bobby to lie down. Although scared, he does and she waves some of the same box things over him. Then she reports to Sef, "He is in very good condition for his age My Lord." "Good!", Sef says then as he helps Bobby get out of the bed, "Come on. I have something you will want to sssee!"

Bobby follows Sef and Sarrah out a wall that slides open and through winding passages that remind him of the caves he once explored when he was younger, although MUCH brighter. Another wall opens and they step into a small room. Sef, apparently talking to himself says, "Bridge" and Bobby hears a strange sound and lights coming from the walls. Soon both sound and lights stop and the wall opens again. What Bobby sees is beyond ANYTHING he has EVER dared imagine! There is a BIG, bright, circular room with lots of people wearing the same kind of uniform as Sef , in it. Most are sitting in front of boxes that they occasionally poke at. One female stands as they enter and yells, "Captain on the Bridge!" Sef replies, "At ease." and she sits back down. BUT it is what is hanging on the wall everyone is facing that really shocks Bobby the most! It looks like a picture, a picture of a ball painted with swirls of green, blue, brown and white! He walks the raised path that leads to it so he can get a better look! One of the people that had stayed with his mother and he after they got to their new home spent his spare time gathering material and making small pictures like this but his were not anywhere near as big or beautiful! Bobby looks closer, the white swirls seem to be moving! "Sef?", he calls pointing to the picture. "That YOURrr home Bobby!", Sef says, to prove it he orders, "Mmmagnify so we can sssee crash sssite." Bobby watches as the picture changes, until it shows the forest, the ditch, the thing and people moving around it. Over the next hour Sef shows Bobby wonder after wonder.

The last stop in the tour is another big room, this time filled with tables and chairs. Sef calls it a Mess Hall. "Hungry Bobby?", Sef asks. "Yes Sef but there is no food in here and no place to catch any!" With a twitch of his tail Sef steps over to a machine on the wall and says, "You were kind enough to ssshare yourrr Plant Partsss with me, ssso let me ssshare one of my favorite meals with you. Computerrr, KFC ten piece Family Meal." Bobby hears the machine make a odd noise and then watches as more food than he has ever seen at one time appears on a plate. Sef carries the food to a table and motions for Sarrah and Bobby to join him. Remembering what his Mother use to wish for after a hard day of work looking for food, Bobby asks, "Sef, is THAT a Replicator?" Sef, his mouth full of chicken, nods.

As the group is finishing eating, "Jacobs to D'Defet." Sef taps his Com Badge and answers, "D'Sefet here, go ahead Commmander." "We're done here Sef! About ready to pack up and get this traveling zoo on the road!.", Jacobs says. "I assume you have sssome of answers to my questionsss.", D'Sefet asks. "Oh YES!", Jacobs replies, "A Power Transfer Coil blew. You were lucky to land the thing in one piece!" "And my errorrr in navigation?", D'Sefet asks. "Looks like the coil's shielding had been degrading for a long time, with all the interference the thing put out, you were lucky to be only Sixty Light Years off eh!", Jacobs answers. "Isss vessel rrready to be abandoned?" D'Sefet questions. "All that is left to do is activate the Derelict Transponder.", Jacobs says. "Good.", D'Sefet begins, and then, "Do you have fix on Bobby'sss Camp?" "Yes, it is about four miles to the west, why?", Jacobs questions. "I want you to check Escape Pod'sss Logsss. Bobby remembersss hisss mother talking to, what he callsss box in there every night forrr many yearsss. We will meet you there when we beam down to get Bobby'sss belongingsss.", D'Sefet explains, adding, "That isss IF you want to go back to FI-9 with us Bobby!" Bobby almost chokes on the last piece of chicken he is eating as it dawns on him what Sef is asking.

Bobby, Sef and Sarrah beam down to the Camp and Bobby gathers his possessions. A few minutes after they arrive, Jacob joins them. Bobby shows Jacobs the box he remembers his Mother talking to, an old style Tricorder. Before they go Bobby, sensing he would be leaving this world forever says, "Sef do I have time to say good by to Mother and Mama Kitty?" "Of course Bobby.", Sef answers, then asks, "Do you mind if we come to?" "No, not at all Sef!", Bobby answers.

As they start for the grave yard, the group hears a sound echoing through the forest. Jacobs, remembering her childhood in British Columbia, asks, as she draws her Phaser, "WOLVES!?" "Howller!", Bobby growls. The Grave Yard is only a short distance from the Camp. The graves are marked by crude crosses and covered with stones to keep the forest animals from digging them up. The place is neatly kept and there are fresh flowers decorating two of the graves. Sef and Jacobs stay back as a sign of respect as Bobby approaches the two flower decorated ones. Carved on their crosses, names. D'Sefet can read on one Mother and on the other Mama Tiger. Bobby kneels between the graves and D'Sefet can hear him explaining to their occupants what is happening.

Kzinti are VERY superstitious! Even though they live in the 23rd century, they believe in curses, evil sprits AND GHOSTS! Sarrah being a more aware Kzinrret is no different. Because of this, she does NOT enter the Grave Yard. Instead she stands just outside of the clearing, watching. Being outside for a creature with heightened senses use to being inside can be a bit daunting! All the noises, smells and sights can overwhelm and distract. This is probably why neither Sarrah or D'Sefet knew about the danger until it was to late. It was the snap of a twig that betrayed the Howller's presence a heart beat before it sprang at Sarrah. All heads turn to see Sarrah on the ground struggling with and slashing at the Howller. Bobby screams, "NOT THIS TIME!" and although unarmed, sprints toward the fight.

Mission Log: Commander D'Sefet recording:

The Howller was a six foot tall, bi-pedal, Caninoide that Lieutenant Commander Jacobs called a Werewolf. I was able to grab Bobby as he ran past me and keep him from being injured. I want to commend him for his willingness, even though a unarmed Human, to try and intervene in a fight between two combatants, well armed with fang and claw. Sarrah was able to quickly throw the Howller off her and before it could attack again, Lieutenant Commander Jacobs, her Phaser set to Heavy Stun was able to stop the creature from attacking again. Sarrah suffered a few minor cuts that she treated herself. Bobby wanted me to destroy the Howller but I told him that the Federation tries not to do things like that unless absolutely necessary. I also pointed out the Howller was a nursing female, probably with a pup somewhere close by which explained her attack on a potential threat to that pup, at least in the mind of the Howller, Sarrah. We beamed back to the Bastet before the Howller regained consciousness.

Using the information from Hologram and Bobby'sss Mother'sss Personal Logsss, we have learned Lieutenant Commander Charles Hammerstad, hisss wife Lieutenant Elizabeth and their baby ssson Robert were assigned to U.S.S. Kronan NCC- 061224. The Kronan was attacked by unidentified vessel near sssolar sssystem we found Bobby in. On fire and in danger of Warp Core Breach, Captain ordered ssship abandoned. Lieutenant Hammerstad got her ssson and herself aboard Escape Pod with four other crew members and set course for close by Ssstar Sssystem where they had detected the two Class M planetsss. Lieutenant Hammerstad'sss Personal Logsss ssstated that ssshe was in contact with five other Escape Pods heading toward Ssstar Sssystem but after they landed she could not regain contact with any of them. We ssscanned the planetsss before we returned to FI-9. On the opposite ssside of planet from Bobby'sss Camp we found crash sssite of two other Escape Podsss but found no non-native life signsss. There were indicationsss of Humanoid remainsss however. I will leave it up to Ssstarfleet Command as to whether mission to recover Kronan'sss crew will be organized. As warning, we also detected a number of large packsss of Howllersss on planet. We did not detect any Escape Podsss or wreckage on sssecond, outer most, Class M planet.

Bobby . . . Robert is adapting well to his new life. To my sssurprise Sarrah had taken it upon herself to see to that. We were able to locate close family membersss, Second Cousins or something like that and arrange for them to come to FI-9 to meet Robert in the near future.
